Keanu Reeves' Constantine 2 just received the perfect update, and it is just the kind of exciting news that fans of the DC franchise have been waiting many years for. Reeves is one of the biggest stars in the world. Reeves' list of movies includes major franchises like The Matrix, Toy Story, Sonic the Hedgehog, and, of course, the John Wick movies.
John Wick is the R-rated action thriller franchise that reawakened Reeves' career, with four box office hits thus far, leading to the actor appearing in many other major projects. One of those could be his return to the DC movie franchise. No, Reeves has never been part of a DC shared universe. Instead, the actor gave life to John Constantine in 2005's Constantine.
Rather than focus on the magic side of the character, Reeves' Constantine movie went all in on the demons and angels connection. With a cast that included talented stars like Rachel Weisz, Tilda Swinton, Djimon Hounsou, Peter Stormare, Shia LaBeouf, and more, Constantine has become a cult hit over the years. For a long time, DC fans have been asking for Reeves to return.
At the time of writing, there are no plans for Reeves to play John Constantine in James Gunn's DC Universe, which does have a Swamp Thing movie to be directed by James Mangold in development. That said, Reeves, director Francis Lawrence, and more have shared updates on Constantine 2 in recent years. Now, the movie just got an exciting 2026 update, and it is what fans needed to hear.
Keanu Reeves' Constantine 2 Just Got An Exciting Update
After a considerable amount of time from the last update on the status of the long-awaited sequel, Deadline just shared an update on Constantine 2. The trade reported on a list of titles at different stages of development at Skydance after the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger. While DCU titles like the Batman movie The Brave and the Bold and the franchise's announced Wonder Woman reboot were slotted in the "Early Development" category, Reeves' Constantine 2 was not only on the list, but in a separate category, "Development." This seems to indicate that it is further along than those DCU projects.
Over 21 years since Constantine was released in theaters on February 18, 2005, this is the encouraging update that fans have been waiting for. Not only does it confirm that Constantine 2 is still in the works at DC Studios, which happens at a time when there are almost no other live-action Elseworlds — that exist outside the DCU canon — DC projects on the studio's slate, but it also eases any concerns caused by the big studio merger, which could have axed such a project, given how Constantine was not a major box office hit back when it was released, nor is it tied to Gunn's DCU plans.
Why DC's Constantine 2 Should Be Worth The Long Wait
Constantine was an interesting R-rated fantasy thriller that focused on a gritty take on the DC character and established a world with plenty of built-in lore for sequels to explore. Constantine 2 can finally unleash the DC franchise's potential. The film would also be freed from any larger universe ties, and given how nearly all other live-action DC projects at the moment seem to come from the DCU — or Matt Reeves' The Batman universe — having a project like Constantine 2 is the breath of fresh air that DC Studios could use.
Additionally, Constantine is a fan-favorite DC Comics character who could use a bigger presence in theaters, and Constantine 2 has become a passion project for creatives like Reeves, Lawrence, and Akiva Goldsman, who will pen the sequel, as they have been trying to get this DC movie made for decades. As such, the amount of dedication and care put into this project could make Constantine 2 one of DC's most exciting releases yet, and the film does not block John Constantine from showing up in Gunn's DCU, as Robert Pattinson's Batman will co-exist with the shared universe's separate Bruce Wayne.
