Reacher Season 5 Can Finally Abandon 1 Overused Story Formula

In all three seasons, so far, Prime Video's Reacher has found creative ways to keep things fresh and novel. Some story beats that have defined all three seasons of Reacher will also likely be seen in the show's upcoming installment. After season 4, however, Prime Video's Reacher finally has the opportunity to change things a little and abandon an overused story formula.

Similar to Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, Prime Video's Reacher almost unfolds as an anthology where each new installment unfolds in a new setting. With a new setting, every new season follows a new set of people Reacher has to work with to serve justice to a new group of villains. Even in season 4, the Prime Video detective series is taking the same approach by adapting Lee Child's Gone Tomorrow.

However, since Reacher season 5 has already started filming, it is hard not to see how the show can finally bring some continuity to its narrative. While still staying true to the source material, Prime Video's Reacher can finally draw more concrete connective threads between seasons. To achieve this, it will have to adapt one book from the original series in season 5 and introduce one key character.

Adapting 1 Lee Child Book In Season 5 Could Completely Change Prime Video’s Reacher

If the Prime Video series wishes to bring a semblance of continuity after season 4, it must start by adapting the fourteenth book, 61 Hours, from the original Lee Child series. 61 Hours almost marks the inception of a tetralogy in which three more follow-up books (Worth Dying For, A Wanted Man, and Never Go Back) maintain a lot more continuity than most other installments in the series.

This would give the Prime Video series a perfect season 5 to season 8 roadmap before it could potentially end its run. Interestingly, 61 Hours also introduces a character named Major Susan Turner who seems like the perfect combination of Roscoe and Neagley. What starts as a phone conversation between her and Reacher soon turns into a long romantic endeavor, giving the character his longest relationship arc.

One of the bigger challenges with adapting Never Go Back is that the second Jack Reacher movie, which stars Tom Cruise, has already delivered its core story. However, given how the Prime Video show has already etched a solid identity for itself and is widely considered the superior adaptation of Lee Child's work, it does not have to avoid adapting the same books as the movies.

Hopefully, beyond season 4, Prime Video's Reacher will finally consider starting a continuous four-book arc by picking up 61 Hours for season 5. This would allow the franchise to smoothly transition its narrative from one season to another in the future and potentially retain its large audience across multiple seasons.

Reacher's Biggest Challenge Is Keeping Things Fresh

Reacher has become one of the greatest modern crime thrillers on television, and it has rightfully earned its place among the best shows of the genre. There is something truly fascinating about watching a lone-wolf overpowered hero move from one location in the United States to another and become entangled in a new conspiracy every season.

However, while each installment tells a self-contained story with a fresh supporting cast, the show's formula risks getting too redundant after a few seasons. The show's whole shtick, where it portrays Jack Reacher as a mysterious stranger, could eventually seem a little too repetitive if there is a lack of continuity between arcs.

Even the portrayal of how Jack Reacher has a new love interest in every season is starting to get formulaic. Every time a new female character is introduced in the series, a viewer already knows they are unlikely to carry over into the next chapter. By starting the books' tetralogy with 61 Hours, Prime Video's Reacher could overcome many of these issues.

Since no official announcements surrounding the book choice for Reacher season 5 have been made, it is hard to tell which novel the Prime Video series has picked for the next installment. However, one can still hope that Lee Child's 61 Hours is next in line as it could radically shift the franchise's narrative formula and potentially make it better.
