James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the best games of all time, in the opinions of many, with Rockstar's Western epic taking players on a cinematic journey like no other in the medium. That said, the enclosed two-part narrative had the knock-on effect of lowering the priority placed on a third game, particularly with the behemoth of GTA VI to consider.

The fact is that there's every chance we don't ever get a Red Dead Redemption game, but market forces and the potential profit would err on the side of it coming along at some point. When it does, fans have been speculating on what it could be like, and a new protagonist has been put forward as a potential option for the third game.

Over on Reddit, one user shared a post detailing a dream they had, in which they were playing Red Dead Redemption 3. In it, they took control of Lyle Morgan, Arthur Morgan's father, who himself is an outlaw that gets something of a mention in the second game.

It's an interesting prospect, but many of the mentions of the character in Red Dead Redemption 2 come from Arthur, and he very rarely has anything nice to say at all. He even goes as far as saying his death "weren't soon enough," which doesn't exactly set him up to serve as a protagonist we can all get behind.

Comments were decidedly split as well, with one saying, "Sounds interesting. Arthur did say his dad didn’t die soon enough, potential epilogue to play as young Arthur Morgan and the story end with him meeting Dutch and Hosea."

With that in mind, it might make more sense if he were to serve as some form of antagonist, though that could create difficulties with Arthur's presence in the second game. Many more weighed in to say exactly what they wanted from the series, with one saying, "It's a cool thing to dream, but the only right way for a new Rockstar western is a completely new story. No lore restrictions."

"I want a Native American perspective of the Wild West and there were in fact Native American outlaw gangs in the old west. And it doesn’t even have to take place in the old west just the time period they would have so much to work with," another added.

Whatever does happen with the next Red Dead Redemption game, it's clear we're going to be waiting a while to see it, if we ever get to at all. GTA VI is going to be dominating all of the headlines for a while to come yet, leaving cowboy fans out in the proverbial cold while they wait to hear more from Rockstar about their plans for the franchise.
