Zuko isn't done being the Blue Spirit yet.

Avatar: The Last Airbender star Dallas Liu has teased Zuko's "epic" transformation into the Blue Spirit in season 2, and what it means for his story going forward. Zuko is one of the more complex characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender, having adopted the Blue Spirit identity in season 1 to save Aang, with his true intentions being to capture the Avatar himself. The mask allows him to be someone else, not only to ensure nobody knows his true intentions, but also to escape being the exiled son of Fire Lord Ozai.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for our cover story about the show's return, Liu shared the importance of Zuko's Blue Spirit identity in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2. The actor confirms there will be much more of the identity at play in the upcoming episodes, explaining how he portrays the alter ego in every scene he's in. This is confirmed by his co-star, Elizabeth Yu, who plays Azula, explaining the physical acting on display and how it will be relevant to the larger story.

Check out what Liu and Yu had to say below:

Dallas Liu: But I love how much Blue Spirit you get to see this season. I think that's actually super epic. All the fight scenes that I got to do, all of the acting beats in the mask were so much fun, just because it was a new type of physical acting that I had never gotten to play before be brought to life on screen. I thought it was genuinely so fun, because you can't see anything that's happening on my face. It's really about the energy that you're trying to push out to capture that.

Elizabeth Yu: And that's all Dallas, too. You think just because it's a black suit and a mask, it would be someone else. It's all him. He's fully in control of his character at those moments, which I love getting to watch and see.

The Blue Spirit only appeared once during Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1, when Zuko put on the mask to rescue Aang from Zhao. Even after learning his true identity, knowing he was only rescued for selfish reasons, Aang still protects the Fire Nation prince and saves him from getting captured. The pair have a short heart-to-heart afterwards, where Zuko explains more of his perspective to Aang. However, by the end of their encounter, the duo are still enemies, even if the Avatar now understands the prince a little bit better.

Zuko as the Blue Spirit in Avatar The Last Airbender season 1

Based on what Liu and Yu said about the Blue Spirit, it seems like Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will have a bit more of Zuko's alternate identity than when he donned the mask again in the original animated series. In the source material, Zuko would use his alter ego to his advantage, stealing food for him and Iroh after the pair were labeled traitors. The same thing might be showcased in season 2, with Zuko needing to use his other identity in order for the pair to survive together.

However, given the action teased by both actors, it's equally possible the Blue Spirit ends up having more to do this time around than in the previous iteration of the story. There appear to be multiple fight scenes where his persona is involved, something that wasn't quite the same in the animated show. While the context of said scenes remains a mystery for now, it seems like the mask is going to have more screen time than ever before.

With Zuko taking on the mantle of the Blue Spirit even more going forward, it seems like Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will be changing things while still keeping the soul of the original series alive. What this means for Zuko's story remains unclear, but the promise of more action means there will be plenty for the prince to do as his character arc develops.
