The Pitt Star Revealed How Conversation With Creator Led To Emmy Win

Series star Ernest Harden Jr. has revealed how one conversation with one of the series' creators led to their eventual win at the Emmys. Harden Jr. had a recurring role on The Pitt as Louie, a frequent patient to the ER who arrives regularly due to health problems stemming from alcoholism. In season 2, he ends up in the hospital for multiple hours, forced to undergo an important treatment after drinking too much. However, tragedy strikes when he suddenly dies, leading to a mournful memorial in the hospital for all its staff.

Now, during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, for which ScreenRant was in attendance, Harden Jr. won the award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role in The Pitt. Speaking with the award in his hand, Harding Jr. credited series star and executive producer Noah Wyle for his win. Reminiscing about early conversations surrounding his role, the actor explained how Wyle pushed for him to return in season 2, alongside his character's ultimate demise. He credits the star and executive producer for the decision with his storyline, saying it led to his Emmy win that night.

I was doing a semi-regular during the first season. I was on The Pitt the day it started. So they were like family to me.... And I was there all the time. It was a great gig, I was very satisfied with it. But I knew Noah Wyle was the executive producer as well as the star, so we had a conversation. We were getting ready to shoot one of the scenes and we had a quick conversation. And I was telling him, I said, "You know what? Since you're the executive producer, I would like to have a little better billing. I want to be on a single card if possible." He said, "Well, should I do that?" I said, "Well..." and they gave me a chance to give him my resume. I said, "Well, I had a regular role on The Jeffersons, and I starred in a movie called White Men Can't Jump. And also I starred in a movie with Betty Davis called White Mama." And he said, "Oh! What did you do with Betty Davis?" I said, "This movie was called White Mama," and I told him the reasons she called it that. And he said, "When was that?" I said, "That was 1980." I said, "How old were you in 1980?" He said, "I was 10." I said, "Oh, okay, you were 10 years old, I was starring in movies." So he started to get up. And I said, "I didn't mean to offend you," because I knew he was an executive producer. And he said, "No, no, no, we're just talking shop."

We did shoot for the entire week together, and end of the week, we were gonna shoot another scene. And the first thing he said to me before we started to shoot was, "Three Days of the Condor." And I said, "Wait a minute, I didn't tell you about that one! Oh, you've been researching me!" He said, "Yeah, I just wanted to see if you were full of c***." I said, "Now you know I'm full of c***." And we got so tight. And he said, "Hey, I believe you're going to be back in the second season." And you hear that, you don't know, but he seemed very sincere. And I was the only patient that came back. And here I am.

He did not only elevate my billing, but they made me a guest star, and I was on every one in the second season until, I don't know if I'm spoiling the story, but I die! Until I died. One time I said, "No, am I gonna die?" Because all the wardrobe people and everybody's stopping me, and they're crying, and I'm saying "What's going on? I planned on being here five years, that's just five days in Pitt world. But he said, "No, sit right here, Ernest. He said, "America's gonna cry for you," and he wasn't lying. He just said, "Trust me." And I just saw him downstairs. I said, "I trusted you, and look what it is, and look what it led to." So, he's a great man. He's not only a great actor, he's a greater human being.

Wyle's words about Harden Jr.'s role in The Pitt season 2 rang true, with Louie's death being one of the most impactful moments of the season. His frequent appearances before his demise allowed the show to flesh out his character, with the reveal that he'd tragically lost his wife and unborn child long before the events of the show, leading to his alcoholism. It added a layer of tragedy to his character, while also showcasing how positive he could be in spite of all the pain he'd endured throughout his life.

Just like Harden Jr. told Wyle, his acting career spans decades, lending his talents to a number of high-profile projects before joining the cast of The Pitt. Alongside the movies he told the series lead about, he's also starred in the buddy cop comedy Hollywood Homicide, the satirical film Born in East L.A., and the horror movie The Final Terror. He's also had a number of TV guest appearances in between his recurring role on The Jeffersons, including for Hill Street Blues, ER, and The Young and the Restless.

As for his role as Louie, the memory of his character will no doubt carry over into The Pitt season 3, which takes place just four months after the end of season 2. Although Harden Jr. isn't expected to reprise his role following Louie's death, it's doubtless the hospital will include some kind of nod to him going forward, considering how important he was to everyone in the ER. While the decision to kill him off means he won't appear again, his storyline wound up being one of the most impactful in season 2.

With an Emmy win now under his belt, Harden Jr. proved that his role in The Pitt has been one of the most impactful of his whole career. The actor's talent and his ability to bring such a strong character to life can't be understated, with the show's approach to his story leaving a lasting impression that more than justifies his win at the awards ceremony.
