Rosario Dawson's Cut Spider-Man: Brand New Day Cameo Clarified By Marvel Writers

Dawson previously played Claire in several of Marvel's Netflix shows, beginning with Daredevil before appearing in Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. Her character frequently treated injured superheroes, making her one of the most recognizable connective figures from the MCU's original street-level era.

Dawson had already revealed before Spider-Man: Brand New Day's release that she filmed a scene for the movie that was removed from the final cut. However, the exact circumstances surrounding Claire's appearance remained unclear, particularly after speculation connected her to Peter Parker's later hospital scene involving Jon Bernthal's Punisher.

Speaking with TheWrap, McKenna and Sommers have now clarified that Claire actually encountered Spider-Man much earlier in the movie. Her scene followed Peter's fight with Scorpion, with the injured hero going to the hospital and being treated by the Night Nurse before visiting Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) at the college.

McKenna praised Dawson's work while pointing to Spider-Man: Brand New Day's already substantial runtime and large ensemble as factors that made difficult cuts inevitable. Read his comments below:

Rosario Dawson is great. I wasn’t there for those discussions. But it was great. If anything, you have a movie that is two-and-a-half hours long, and it’s almost an embarrassment of riches with so many great characters and so many great scenes.

Sommers similarly stressed that Claire's scene wasn't removed because of its quality, saying he believes it was ultimately a casualty of the movie's two-hour and 30-minute run time:

The scene they did was a good scene I think the only reason it’s not in the final cut was just it was probably cut for time because it was very good.

McKenna also described the sequence as "kind of a double beat," since Peter would have gone directly from his encounter with Claire to seeking help from Bruce Banner.

That context makes the deletion easier to understand. Earlier in the same interview, McKenna explained that Bruce was incorporated into Spider-Man: Brand New Day specifically because Peter needed help understanding his growing "spider-problem." Having Claire treat Peter immediately beforehand could therefore have created two consecutive scenes centered around him seeking assistance from established MCU characters.

The cut is still notable because Claire would have fit naturally into Spider-Man: Brand New Day's more street-level corner of the MCU. The movie already brings Bernthal's Punisher into Spider-Man's world and finally follows up on Michael Mando's Scorpion after his debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Claire treating Peter after that fight would have extended her long-standing role of providing medical help to injured heroes throughout Marvel's street-level stories.

It also would have marked Dawson's return as Claire Temple eight years after her appearance in Luke Cage season 2 in 2018.

Ultimately, Claire's absence appears to be a storytelling decision rather than a reflection of the scene's quality. With McKenna calling the moment part of a "double beat" and Sommers emphasizing that the sequence itself was "very good," the reveal offers an exciting glimpse at how close Spider-Man: Brand New Day came to another meaningful connection between Spider-Man and the MCU's street-level world.
