Now, more than ever, it is a terrible time to be a Doctor Who fan. After the Fourteenth Doctor's (Ncuti Gatwa) controversial regeneration into former traveling companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) in summer 2025, the future of the British sci-fi series remained uncertain on several fronts. With Disney's departure and worried murmurs about the lack of filming for the proposed Christmas special, fans speculated whether the 2026 Christmas Special would actually happen.

As it turns out, the answer is a deafening no — straight from the mouth of not just the BBC, but former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies. This news comes shortly after the confirmation that Doctor Who’s 2005 to 2022 revival run would find a new international home on AMC+.

The full statement from the BBC can be read below:

Today we’re announcing an update on plans for the future of Doctor Who.

As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year. Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come.

After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode. This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory.

The previously announced new Doctor Who animation series for CBeebies is currently in production.

Details of the tender will be announced in due course.

Alongside a canceled Christmas special, Davies as well as the series' current production company, Bad Wolf, have also made a graceful exit from the sci-fi juggernaut.

But what is competitive tender? To put it frankly, Doctor Who currently has no team that's actively working on the series, and so, going forward, the franchise is waiting for other production companies to "pitch" for the opportunity to work on it. Considering the lukewarm reaction to the most recent seasons from both fans and critics alike, we can't help but wonder who will be willing enough to jump into wrangling the series back to its former glory days.

Furthermore, Davies was not shy in highlighting the details of the proposed Christmas special — which is to say, there were zero details at all.

Posting on Instagram, the former showrunner spoke out about the Christmas special. "For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor. You may disagree; fine, sit in that chair and wait to be proved right. You’ll wait a lonnng time."

Yet, despite the exit, Davies also stated that he was "as excited as anyone to see what comes next."

Amidst all this uncertainty, the future of Doctor Who remains unclear. Regardless of whether you were a fan of the later seasons or not, this most recent news is an undeniably crushing blow for a sci-fi series that has been a British staple since 1963.
