Samsung plans $79B shareholder return package announcement on Friday

Samsung Electronics is preparing to hand shareholders what could be the biggest return package in the company’s history. The announcement, expected after a board meeting in Seoul on Friday, August 22, covers an initiative potentially worth up to 110 trillion won, roughly $79 billion.

What’s in the package

The return initiative is expected to include a special dividend alongside a formal commitment to allocate half of Samsung’s free cash flow back to shareholders. That 50% free cash flow pledge isn’t entirely new territory for the company. Samsung had already committed to the same ratio under its 2024-2026 shareholder return program, which included regular annual dividends of 9.8 trillion won.

What Friday’s announcement appears to do is formalize and extend that commitment, while adding the special dividend on top. The board meeting is scheduled for around 4 p.m. local Seoul time.

Why Samsung can afford to be this generous

Demand for high-bandwidth memory and advanced DRAM, the kinds of chips that power large language models and GPU clusters, has driven Samsung’s profits to record levels.

South Korean rival SK Hynix has announced its own 40 trillion won buyback plan. SK Hynix has arguably been the bigger short-term winner in the high-bandwidth memory segment, having locked down a critical supply relationship with Nvidia.

What this means for investors and the sector

Samsung’s prior per-share dividend payouts ran in the range of 361 to 374 won per share. The new package, if structured similarly at scale, would represent a substantial step up from that baseline, though the exact per-share mechanics will become clear after Friday’s board meeting concludes.
