See Which Films Have Been Submitted for Best International Feature at the 2027 Oscars

As Oscar contenders are revealed this fall, one of the increasingly important categories is Best International Feature, which went through a recent change.

The films submitting for the category cannot be in English for a majority of the film, nor can they have been produced inside the United States. Now, in addition to being eligible via a country submitting the film on its behalf, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made a new rule that the top prize winners of the biggest film festivals around the world, from Sundance to Cannes to Venice and more, are automatically eligible to submit for the category as well, should the film meet the base requirements.

So, put into practice, “Yellow Letters,” directed by İlker Çatak, whose previous film “The Teacher’s Lounge” was nominated for Best International Feature on behalf of Germany, is eligible for the category because it won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale. That made room for Germany to select fellow German production “Everytime” to represent the country in Best International Feature. Either way, the film itself will be listed as the nominee, and the Oscar statuette will be accepted by the director. If the latter film were to win, the Academy Award would go to the country that submitted it as well.

There is still plenty of room to double up. Although “Fjord” was already eligible for Best International Feature after winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2026, Romania still selected the Neon release, directed by Cristian Mungiu, to represent it in the category at the Academy Awards.

Films representing countries go through a submission process in which they have to have been chosen by a national organization, jury, or committee composed of people from the film industry. That is often problematic for films directed by dissident filmmakers. Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev is too critical of Russia to make it through the selection process for the filmmaker’s home country, but the film did make it through France’s submission process, as a country’s selection does not have to be in its national language.

Last season, 92 films submitted for Best International Feature consideration. Countries have until Wednesday, September 30, 2026 to make their submissions. Preliminary voting for Best International Feature, as well as nine other categories, will occur from December 7 through 11. The following week, on Tuesday, December 15, the Academy will announce its Oscars shortlists, and voters will later choose the five Best International Feature nominees from a list of the 15 submissions that received the most votes.

The 2027 Oscar nominations will be announced on Thursday, January 21, and the 99th Academy Awards will occur on Sunday, March 14, 2027.
