Regardless of how you feel about sequels, it's hard not to get excited about another Shrek movie when you hear Smash Mouth’s “All Star” playing. While Shrek 5 had been rumored for years, it was only in 2024 that we got solid confirmation. Two years later, an official teaser trailer is here, with two significant new details: a brand-new release date of 2027 and further evidence that the beef between DreamWorks and Disney is still very much on.

A project that originally started out as a punishment for DreamWorks employees to work on, Shrek won hearts across the globe when it debuted in 2001. Now 25 years later, Shrek and Donkey are back on another adventure — the likes of which have only been seen in the previous four Shrek films.

As fans have aged over the years, so has Shrek, and that's never been clearer than in this teaser trailer. While Shrek started his time in the spotlight alone, his family and friends have grown (and aged) right along with him. No longer is it just Shrek and Donkey kicking butts and taking names, but Shrek, Fiona, Donkey (all of whom are voiced once more by the original cast from the previous films), as well as Shrek and Fiona's children: daughter Felicia (Zendaya), as well as sons Fergus (Marcello Hernandez) and Farkle (Skyler Gisondo).

The specifics of what this adventure is have yet to be revealed, though it does look as though Shrek 5 will be doing its utmost to play all of Shrek's greatest hits. We've got what looks to be a jailbreak segment, the return of fan-favorites like Gingerbread Man, aka “Gingy" (Conrad Vernon), and what looks to be a scene with a Godzilla-esque creature roaming through a city block. Is it a coincidence that a lot of these moments seem to pay homage to the best Shrek film, Shrek 2? We couldn't say.

Furthermore, it looks as though the decades-long rivalry between DreamWorks and Disney is still going strong. At one point in the trailer, Shrek and Fiona traverse through a shady alley, but come across a droopy, animated snowman. The snowman tips his hat and croaks, 'Wanna date a snowman?' before the trailer cuts to the next scene. Nice one, DreamWorks.

We know that fans of the franchise should expect a lot of riffing on itself in Shrek 5, but whether it will manage to pull in old and new fans alike remains to be seen.

Shrek 5 hits theaters sometime in the summer of 2027.
