'Someone Needs A Lesson' quest walkthrough in The Blood of Dawnwalker

The "Someone Needs A Lesson" quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker is one of the very first you can encounter during your time as Coen, as it begins right around the corner from his family home in Laslea. It has a dynamic start though, which means you don't need to speak to anyone to begin; instead, you must chase and catch Vasil as he shouts insults at Coen while running around the village.

"Someone Needs A Lesson" can lead to a few different outcomes, however, so we've outlined each of them here, along with the steps you can take along the way in The Blood of Dawnwalker.

[Ed. note: This guide contains spoilers for The Blood of Dawnwalker, so continue at your own risk! Feel free to follow along or bookmark this page and come back later.]

As mentioned above, "Someone Needs A Lesson" starts when Coen catches Vasil in the village. He can be found just up the path, as you head further into the center of the village. If you're doing the "Disturbed" quest, you'll likely find Vasil as you follow those footprints to discover who defiled Kvet's grave. Here's the list of each decision you'll encounter throughout the quest:

  1. Fight Vasil or talk with him
  2. Agree with Atanas to teach Vasil a lesson or not
  3. Beat Vasil, refuse, or tell Atanas to let him go
  4. Say nothing or stop Atanas from beating Vasil
  5. Apologize to Vasil or not

Below you'll find each step explained in detail, along with their outcomes.

Should you fight Vasil or talk with him in 'Someone Needs a Lesson?'

No matter what option you choose here, or whether you win or lose the fight, Vasil's father, Atanas, will show up and interrupt the commotion.

After Atanas shows up, he'll come down hard on Vasil, telling him off and giving Coen the chance to teach him a lesson. If you agree, Atanas will take Vasil to a tree and make him take off his shirt to undergo a beating.

However, if you keep refusing, Atanas will then insist on fighting Coen. No matter whether you win or lose, this will then lead to a cutscene a little later where Vasil is sitting solemnly on a bench.

If you agree to teaching Vasil a lesson, the next decision you'll need to make is whether to actually beat him or not. Comply with Atanas and you'll be presented with an interactive cutscene to hit Vasil in the back with a stick a few times. At this point, given the number of scars on Vasil's back, it's evident this is a regular occurrence from Atanas.

However, if you decline at this stage to beat Vasil, Atanas will offer to beat Vasil himself. You can step in and say you won't let him do it, which will result in a fight against Atanas if you follow that up by accusing him of being drunk, or you can say nothing, which will commence a cutscene that shows Atanas hitting him with the stick.

What should you say to Vasil at the end of 'Someone Needs a Lesson?'

No matter what options you choose throughout this quest, they all lead to a similar scene: Coen spotting Vasil sitting on a bench as he walks past. Your dialogue options, depending on your choices earlier in the quest, will be along the lines of apologizing, saying you hope he learned something, or "never mind."

Again, each of these outcomes is effectively the same. The quest will end and you'll earn 250 XP for your trouble. Later down the line, you can encounter Vasil again long after the prologue, and he'll gift you an amulet, but as far as we're aware, the decisions made in "Someone Needs A Lesson" have no bearing on that.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is a time-sensitive, narrative RPG where your actions and decisions matter. If you're just starting out, check out our beginner's guide and our recommended quests to do before mass. After the prologue, you're free to explore Vale Sangora and take on Brencis' boyars however you please, but the freedom can be a bit overwhelming. To help, here's what we recommend doing after the prologue.
