It was back in 1997 that Stargate SG-1 took fans back to the Stargate universe following the 1994 science fiction film of the same name. Running until 2007 and consisting of well over 200 episodes, Stargate SG-1 was truly the sci-fi drama of the time, and it is no wonder that it is remembered fondly to this day.
Not only did it go onto inspire the animated television series Stargate Infinity, but it was also the starting point for many other live-action spin-offs that followed, including Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, and Stargate Origins.
Set a year after the events of the Stargate movie, Stargate SG-1 follows a secret United States military expedition that is led by an ancient, alien artifact known as the Stargate. With the artifact allowing its users to travel instantaneously across the galaxy, we join Colonel Jack O'Neill, Dr. Daniel Jackson, Dr. Samantha Carter, and Teal'c as they explore new worlds, gather advanced technology, and forge alliances.
It has now been almost two decades since Stargate SG-1 concluded, but it seems as though the hit television series has already received a reboot courtesy of Stargate: Timekeepers, a real-time tactics game that launched back in 2024.
Developed by Slitherine Ltd., Stargate: Timekeepers sees players given the task of leading a group of specialists through a story-driven campaign set in the SG-1 universe. As you command your characters to sneak past enemy lines, use unique skills and craft the perfect plan in order to unravel a timeloop mystery, you will need to have what it takes to defeat the Goa’uld threat.
Paying homage to the classic television show that inspired it, Stargate: Timekeepers features an original narrative set in the Stargate SG-1 universe. As the official synopsis reads:
Stargate: Timekeepers departs from the end of season 7 of the Stargate SG-1 main plot to create an original story, unfolding over 14 narrative-rich missions. Your adventure starts during the Battle of Antarctica, where Commander Eva McCain and her team are supporting the SG-1 against Anubis’s fleet.
Sometime later, Eva and her team of specialists are tasked with a new mission in the Stargate universe: help the Jaffa Resistance, prevent brutal rituals, strike against Moloc’s army, and seek an alliance with the Unas.
With each specialist offering unique skills, you will have to synchronize your team in order to defeat Kull Warriors, Jaffa Generals, Moloc’s Officers and many other original enemies as you eliminate them in quick succession. As such, your team will consist of long-time soldier Eva McCain, trained spy Sam Watson, Jaffa rebel A'ta, and powerful yet good-natured Unas veteran Xugga.
Despite sounding like the ultimate experience for fans of Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Timekeepers currently sits at a 'Mixed' review rating over on Steam, with some players criticizing its unsightly UI and terrible mechanics. However, if you are a fan of real-time tactics games, then it seems as though this SG-1-inspired title may just be the one for you. After all, you can only decide if a game is truly for you if you play it for yourself, and right now, Stargate: Timekeepers is available at a 25% discount on Steam.
