Adam has been writing in the entertainment news space for over a decade. Beginning his career of covering film and TV at CinemaBlend, he has also appeared on The Flash Podcast and done several radio spots.

After earning critical acclaim during its theatrical run earlier this year, Steven Soderbergh’s new crime movie is set to arrive on Hulu next month.

On April 10, The Christophers opened in theaters opposite movies like You, Me & Tuscany and Beast. The crime-focused black comedy starring Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel followed a year after Soderbergh’s previous movie, Black Bag. Like its predecessor, The Christophers was also received positively. Those who missed out on seeing the movie on the big screen only have to wait several weeks to watch it on streaming.

Hulu has announced that The Christophers will be added to its catalog on Saturday, August 22. 2023’s All of Us Strangers and 2024’s Elevation are the other two movies that will become available on the platform that same day, as well as My 600-lb Life: Where Are They Now? seasons 3 and 4, MythBusters seasons 6 and 7, and 9/11: Reunited season 1. The Christophers’ arrival also follows two days after the premiere of the Jon Favreau-produced docuseries Lion, which will additionally be accessible on Disney+ and the National Geographic Channel.

The Christophers stars McKellen as an elderly and eccentric artist named Julian Sklar, and the movie takes its title from two series of paintings that Julian made in the 1990s based on a past lover. There was also a third series of “Christophers” that was never finished. In the present day, Julian’s children hire Coel’s Lori Butler, an artist who hasn't exhibited new works in years, to pose as their father’s assistant so she can secretly finish the third series, and they in turn can sell the paintings for a lot of money after he dies.

McKellen and Coel are joined in The Christophers by James Corden, Jessica Gunning, Tilly Botsford, Daniel Fearn, Lucy McCormick, Dallas Campbell, and Ferdy Roberts. Ed Solomon of Bill & Ted fame wrote the script. He and Soderbergh previously collaborated on 2021's No Sudden Move, another one of Soderbergh's best movies. The Christophers held its world premiere on September 7, 2025, at the Toronto Film Festival ahead of the April 10 wide release by Neon.

As previously mentioned, The Christophers has been well received among the public. ScreenRant’s review of The Christophers rated it seven out of 10 stars, stating that the movie “trusts its two leads and their characters to guide the audience to its desired conclusion, and watching it unfurl is a rewarding experience.” It also noted how this new feature film “couldn’t be more different” than Black Bag and Soderbergh’s movie before that, Presence, thus showing that he “remains one of the most interesting directors working today.”

With The Christophers boasting a high Rotten Tomatoes score of 92% among critics, and 87% among the site’s users, it ranks as one of 2026's biggest cinematic successes, critically speaking. As far as Soderbergh's future goes, it was announced in April 2025 that the filmmaker is making a documentary about the final interview that The Beatles member John Lennon gave with wife Yoko Ono before his death in 1980.
