Finding family-friendly flicks to watch during the spooky season can feel like a treasure hunt, particularly in the streaming age. Seasonal movies seem deeply divided between horror unsuitable for younger viewers and juvenile Halloween specials uninteresting to older viewers. When you do think of the perfect feature, it is inevitably on the one streaming service you don’t have or only available to rent, for an inflated price. Thankfully, one family-friendly adventure film well-suited for the season is readily accessible this month - The Goonies.
This 1980s kids’ classic is a must-watch for viewers of (almost) all ages. It features plenty of spooks, thrills, jokes, and heart to keep everyone hooked. That's how it went from being a middling kid's release to a beloved and long-lasting IP with a strong cult following. Over 40 years after its release, the film is as popular as ever and The Goonies 2 is reportedly in development—with the original screenwriter returning.
With a long-awaited sequel on the way, and the spooky season in full swing, now is the time to embark on a watch (or rewatch) of this childhood adventure gem. Thankfully, The Goonies is currently available to stream without a subscription cost.
The Goonies Explained
The Goonies is a '80s family adventure film from Warner Bros. Pictures. Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon) directs the beloved flick off a screen play by Chris Columbus, based on an original story by Steven Spielberg. With Spielberg and Columbus collaborating, it is little surprise that The Goonies is a near-perfect kids' movie.
The action-comedy classic follows a simple but fruitful premise. A boy (Mikey Walsh) discovers an old treasure map and embarks on a quest with his brother and friends. The group of misfits leaves their "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon and set out to find the Pirate One-Eyed Willie’s hidden treasure, in the hopes that the loot will save their homes from foreclosure.
The thrilling and charming narrative is perfectly sold by the gaggle of young actors. The central cast of The Goonies includes Sean Astin as Mikey, Josh Brolin as Brand, Jeff Cohen as Chunk, Corey Feldman as Mouth, and Ke Huy Quan as Data. Kerri Green and Martha Plimpton also join the adventure as Andy and Stef.
Why It's One Of The Greatest Family Adventure Movies Ever Made
The Goonies is, hands down, one of the best family adventure movies ever made. Both classic and original, it spins well-trodden stories into something new, exciting, and genuine. Its true perfection starts with its premise, which establishes a clear, simple objective with high strakes. The kids must find the hidden treasure to save their homes. Right off the bat, audiences are sympathetic to these kids’ plight and invested in their success.
The film then dares to imagine that the kind of fantastical adventure kids’ might dream up truly exists. The group face a series of deadly trials and fabled characters, including crazy criminals and creepy skeletons. The PG flick does not hold back on the action, tension, and even horror. Somehow, Donner makes this 114 minute flick feel like an adventure epic.
The film's chilling antics are balanced by each actors’ distinct charm and humor. The juxtaposition of adolescent attitudes and snark against life-and-death trials makes for high comedy and entertainment. The Goonies comes to a satisfying conclusion that pays off each plot point and delivers compelling character growth. Though not perfect, the ‘80s classic offers just about everything audiences could want from a family adventure film.
41 Years Later, The Goonies Is Streaming For Free On Tubi
Warner Bros. released The Goonies in theaters on June 7, 1985, to a lukewarm reception. It made about $61.4 million at the worldwide box office during its original release (via Box Office Mojo). Its popularity snowballed following its release on VHS, becoming a staple in American family video libraries. Since then, it has become a cherished favorite and a regular rewatch, particularly around October.
Decades later, when the streaming age put an endless array of movies at our fingertips, the classic found renewed viewership. Kids of the 1980s could rewatch their favorite childhood adventure comedy and pass down the thrilling fun to their kids. A new generation of Goonies fans was born. The feature has bopped around various streaming services throughout the years, and it can be difficult to keep track.
This October, Goonies fans are in luck. 41 years after the spooky feature released in theaters, it is streaming for free on Tubi. That is a subscription-less app that offers movies for free with ads. With no paywall, all viewers can embark on a thrilling escapade with The Goonies gang this Halloween season.
