Warning: Massive spoilers ahead for Street Fighter.

The new Street Fighter movie marks the franchise's triumphant return to the silver screen after more than three decades. Several animated movies exist, including Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, widely regarded as one of the best video game adaptations. However, the last live-action title, also called Street Fighter, premiered in 1994. Critics were unimpressed, though it remains an oddly charming watch for fans, with a wild take on the source material.

Street Fighter 2026 takes an entirely different approach to the legendary fighting game series than its predecessor. The movie seems proud of its roots, and it feels like a celebration of Street Fighter, honoring what makes the series so special to fans invested in the games.

The trailers show off the movie's faithfulness to the source material, and audiences will notice that focus throughout the entire runtime. Many story beats will also feel familiar to fans of the video games and their lore. Interestingly, Street Fighter ends on such a cliffhanger that it practically begs for a sequel to wrap it up. One of the biggest plot threads remains unresolved, and all the main characters are primed for a second outing.

What Happens In The Street Fighter Movie

Despite the impressive cast size for Street Fighter, the story is relatively straightforward. M. Bison (David Dastmalchian) hosts a grand fighting tournament, inviting the greatest warrios from around the globe to compete. Beloved fighters from the games arrive to compete, including Ken (Noah Centineo), Dhalsim, and Balrog (50 Cent). Ryu (Andrew Koji) is not on the original roster for the tournament, but takes E. Honda's (Hirooki Goto) place after besting him in a bathhouse brawl.

The tournament itself is part of an elaborate plot by M. Bison to lure Ryu out of hiding. We learn that Ryu disappeared after winning a tournament in 1987 and witnessing Akuma (Joe Anoa'i) killing his master, Gouken. Bison seeks out Ryu because he wants to extract his fighting power and turn it into Psycho Power for himself.

Ryu struggles to keep a powerful evil energy within him under control. He refused to use it when Akuma first appeared, and Ken holds him partly responsible for their master's death. Ryu's arrival at the tournament also draws out Akuma, a vicious fighter with incredible power. Ryu ultimately defeats his deadly opponent, tapping into his own dark energy before Ken takes him down.

Bison's main objective was originally to take Ryu's power, but his goal changes after he first witnesses Akuma. Ryu doesn't kill Akuma, and Bison takes him away, presumably to extract his power for himself. Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li (Callina Liang), and Dan (Andrew Schulz) try to stop Bison from escaping with his prize, but they are ultimately unsuccessful after Cammy (Mel Jarnson) destroys their vehicle.

As the movie draws to a close, our heroes are hitchhiking. They get in a car with Guile (Cody Rhodes) and Dhalsim, ready to put an end to Bison's plan once and for all.

Street Fighter's Finale Teases A Sequel

Chun-Li Vs. Vega and Juli in Street Fighter

The closing scene of Street Fighter is somewhat jarring because Bison is the greatest threat for most of the movie, and he's still at large. While the film doesn't explicitly state that the story will conclude in part two, it seems likely that a sequel is planned. As it stands, Bison has escaped. He failed to absorb Ryu's power, but likely intends to put the same plan in action with Akuma.

Akuma was knocked unconscious after his battle with Ryu, and we see Bison's henchmen restrain him and take him away. Bison has Cammy with him, who is a villain in the 2026 film, and a post-credits scene also hints at Sagat's potential return in a future movie.

By the end of the movie, the main Street Fighter antagonist is a bigger threat than ever. We know what he's capable of, and that he has the resources to put his plans into motion. Chun-Li defeated Vega and Juli (Rayna Vallandingham), but they could still regroup. Sagat is also a formidable fighter in the games and could cause serious problems for our heroes.

The post-credits scene in Street Fighter hints that Sagat could ally with Bison. Fans of the franchise will already know that Sagat's motivations change significantly throughout the series. He works under Bison in the Street Fighter II video game, and we could see a movie portrayal of this relationship in a sequel.
