Just last week, DC fans were shocked by the sudden news that filming on The Batman Part 2 had been paused. In a statement from DC Studios, production was halted due to director Matt Reeves needing to step away due to a "family matter." This has led some to worry that the film will never be completed, as the recent Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance merger also puts into question the future of several projects. Batman himself, Robert Pattinson, is here to offer words of assurance.
At the U.K. premiere of his new film, Primetime, Pattinson was asked about the state of The Batman Part 2 by Pop Drop. In response, the actor acknowledged, "We're pausing for a little bit," but quickly added that, "We're going to figure it all out." That should at least make it clear to fans that Pattinson is committed to the project. It is not clear how long production will remain paused and the film's slated Feb. 18, 2028 release date has not been delayed yet due to Reeves' absence.
The Batman Part 2 has already faced a number of delays, having missed its initial Oct. 2025 release by a mile at this point. While we don't have details on what the sequel's plot will be, there is heavy speculation based on set photos that the Court of Owls will play some role. Alongside Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis will reprise their roles as The Penguin, Commissioner Gordon, and Alfred, respectively. Newcomers include Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, Scarlett Johansson, and Charles Dance.
Will Robert Pattinson be James Gunn's Batman in the new DCU?
Image: Warner Bros. The new DC cinematic universe is now in full swing under the leadership of James Gunn. While we have our Superman in the delightfully charming David Corenswet, set to make his return in next year's Man of Tomorrow, there is still no sign of Batman. As the first of Matt Reeves's films released before Gunn became head of DC Studios, it wasn't planned as part of the new DC universe. Gunn has since explained that it hasn't been added to the new canon because that is Reeves' choice. That does mean that Pattinson isn't the DCU's Batman.
The current DC slate does include The Brave and the Bold, which will be centered on Batman. The film is currently in early development, according to Deadline. Still, the character has been loosely referenced a number of times in existing DC projects, such as an off-hand mention in an episode of HBO's Lanterns.
