If you consider the average jean shopping experience easy, consider yourself lucky. For the rest of us, the struggle continues. With so many factors to consider, it can feel impossible to find a fit that feels made for you, especially if you have a short torso.

To make your jean journey less of a guessing game, E! chatted with stylist Michelle T. Sterling for expert tips on how to find the most flattering denim styles for short-waisted shoppers.

How can I tell if I have a short torso?

This is the first question you should ask yourself when picking a pair of jeans.

Essentially, having a short torso means that there is very little space between your ribcage and hips. A clear indication that you probably have a short torso is “if you wear high-rise jeans and they sit really close to your ribs,” says Sterling. That likely explains why the high-waist pants trend never really resonated with you.

What is the most flattering rise for a short torso?

Sterling explains that “Low to mid-rise jeans usually work best because they create more balance.” These rises help visually elongate the space between your ribs and hips, for the illusion of a longer waist.

In terms of style, she says most silhouettes won’t drastically throw off proportions. Straight-leg, slim straight, bootcut, or a slight flare are all great options as long as they don't sit too high on the waist while adding length through the leg,” Sterling advises.

What jeans should people with short torsos avoid?

While low and mid-rise styles create the illusion of a longer torso, ultra-high waisted rises do the opposite.I would avoid anything that sits too high under the ribcage,” suggests Sterling.

She also advises against trendy balloon or barrel-leg jeans and cropped wide-leg styles, as they create excessive volume at the leg in relation to the waist.

What are the best denim brands for people with short torsos?

Sterling calls out a few brands that carry both classic and trendy low and mid rise styles, including Gap, Madewell, Levi’s, and FRAME. Shop stylist-approved jeans for short torsos below.
