Over the course of its 11-season run, The Walking Dead went from being a relatively straightforward zombie survival drama into a global phenomenon. The franchise has since expanded through numerous spin-offs and other projects, but despite its continued success, there's still something special about the original series that's proven incredibly difficult to replicate.
While the show's brutal depiction of a post-apocalyptic zombie-infested world was a key reason for its success, it was ultimately the characters and their complicated relationships that kept audiences invested. Watching unlikely allies become family, only to have those bonds tested by extreme circumstances, gave The Walking Dead a reason for fans to come back every week beyond just seeing who was going to get infected or eaten alive next.
Possibly the best example of these dynamic relationships is between Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon, arguably the franchise's two most beloved characters. Now, after years of following separate paths, the iconic duo is finally reuniting in a brand-new release that should delight longtime fans.
The reunion The Walking Dead fans have been waiting years to see on television is still up in the air, but there's actually already a way to see Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon back together. The Walking Dead: Aftermath, a free-to-play mobile game developed by Swift Games and published by Ares Interactive in partnership with AMC, features both characters as playable survivors alongside several other familiar faces from the original series.
Aftermath takes players back to the beginning of the zombie apocalypse, starting on the outskirts of Atlanta and returning to the story that started it all. Players initially take control of Rick Grimes before gradually recruiting other survivors, including Daryl, Michonne, Maggie, Glenn, Carol, and Negan.
The game is described as an action roguelite with survival mechanics, and is already blowing up on Google Play with 4.6/5 stars and over 1 million downloads. Players must battle dangerous hordes of walkers, hostile human enemies, and powerful bosses inspired by the show, with randomized upgrades that make every run unique.

Each playable character also features their own weapons, abilities, and combat style, and players can mess around with different strategies to find what works best for them. Outside combat, players are responsible for building and defending their settlement, gathering resources, strengthening their equipment, assigning survivors to different roles, etc.
There's also plenty of nostalgia for longtime viewers, with locations inspired by the original series, including Hershel's Farm, Woodbury, Terminus, and Alexandria. Interestingly, the game's October 23 update introduced a brand-new PvP mode called Rivals, allowing players to assemble three-survivor teams and compete against rival camps. This is probably the best opportunity to bring familiar characters like Rick and Daryl together in combat, although it's not the long-awaited canonical reunion fans are hoping to see on television.

The Walking Dead: Aftermath officially launched worldwide on July 16, 2026, and is currently available to download for free through the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store, with optional in-game purchases.
Developers have continued expanding with additional content, including additional characters, gameplay improvements, and even new events. While it certainly isn't a replacement for another Rick and Daryl reunion on screen, it's an entertaining alternative for fans looking to revisit the characters who made the original The Walking Dead series so iconic.
