As a social simulation game, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream obviously focuses on the interactions and relationships between the Mii characters on your island. Each Mii has their own little personality, and they will act on their own accord to walk around the island, talk to their neighbors, play games, and decide who they like and who they don't. That doesn't mean you don't have any control over who they are going to fall in love with, though.

While playing Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream to review it for ScreenRant, I was able to see how the Mii characters that I made interacted over a couple of weeks. Social interactions are the main point of the experience of this game. Therefore, Living the Dream absolutely includes romance and having characters develop crushes on each other, go on dates, fall in love, and get married.

How Romance Works In Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream

Every Romance Option Is One You Create

Unlike many games where you have specific romance options among the premade NPCs, in Tomodachi Life, you are making all the Mii characters yourself. While making them, you aren't just designing how they're going to look, but you also get to say what their pronouns are, what their romantic preferences are, and if they are related to anyone on the island. These don't instantly determine that Mii 1 will like Mii 2, however, as they will still need to decide that for themselves.

It's also good to note that when making characters, you can mark a Mii as a child. Adults will not fall in love with children, although children can fall in love with other Mii characters. This can be disabled by selecting "none" when determining romantic preferences when creating the child in character creation.

Real-World Relationships Don't Translate Perfectly

Marking That Two Mii Characters Are Married Doesn't Make Them Married

In the same place on the character creation screen where you can mark someone as a sibling of another Mii, there is also a place to mark that the Mii you are working on is a real-world partner for one of the other Mii likenesses.

I experimented with this when I made Mii versions of my brother and his beautiful wife. At first, checking the box didn't seem as though it did anything, as the two Mii characters did not know one another. I introduced them and then kept encouraging them to fall in love, but before they developed feelings for each other, the Mii representing my sister-in-law got a crush on another character first. I discouraged that emotion and eventually the correct Mii characters did fall in love.

I suspect that having them marked as being real-world spouses did help them to fall in love faster and easier. Also, the game does recognize the real-world match after a Mii wedding takes place.

How To Encourage Love Between Two Mii Characters

Or Discouraging It In Some Cases

Although Mii characters like to do their own thing and come up with their own ideas, likes, dislikes, and anything else, you can still have some power over playing matchmaker. In order to encourage two Mii characters to start thinking of each other romantically, you basically have to keep putting them together.

Obviously, the first step is to make sure they are introduced. This is easily done as you just drag one Mii over to the other and they will interact. Once they know each other, they may talk and interact randomly as they run into each other on the island, but you can also keep dragging them to each other to encourage them to build up their friendship.

The best way to prompt one Mii getting a crush on another is by having them help one another. Quite often, the game will have a Mii that needs help. This could mean having hiccups, becoming paralyzed, or having fallen over and needing help getting up. This can also happen when a Mii is sad or upset, as noted by lines coming off their heads. Dragging the prospective love interest over to save the day will then have a chance of a crush being formed.

Eventually, you will see the Mii has a pink pondering bubble. Talking to them then will give you the option to encourage them to confess their feelings to their crush, or you can squash their hopes and tell them that it isn't a good match.

Unfortunately, if a Mii confesses their love in Tomodachi Life when the other Mii isn't quite there yet, there is a chance that they will be denied, causing the Mii to be depressed.

Love, Marriage, And Babies in Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream

LGBTQ+ Couples Can Have Babies Too

Once two Mii characters are sweethearts and in love with each other, they will eventually have the option to get married if things continue to go well. This happens only after they have been sweethearts for at least a few days and their relationship continues to grow by having dates and spending time together. Unfortunately, you still have to wait for the Mii sweethearts to make the decision to want to marry, and then they will propose and hope the partner says yes.

After marriage, if the relationship still continues to grow stronger, eventually they have the potential of having a baby, regardless of the parents' genders. Having a child will still allow you to adjust their profile so you can edit them, and the characteristics of the child will be a blend of the two parents in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.
