It has been reported that Universal is moving forward with Ride Along 3, and some of its original stars are expected to return.
AccoAccording to an exclusive from Deadline, Kevin Hart and Ice Cube are currently discussing reprising their roles for the upcoming sequel after 10 years. The publication revealed that the original director and producer, Tim Story and Will Packer, for the franchise could potentially return as well.
The project is gaining traction following a recent deal between the studio and screenwriter Daniel Gold, known for Tough Guys, who will be writing the screenplay. Although the core team has expressed interest in continuing the franchise for years, progress has been slowed by creative differences. Gold’s new concept is still shrouded in mystery, but it has brought the group back together and is getting the Ride Along sequel back on track.
The Ride Along franchise follows Ben Barber, a fast-talking security guard played by Hart, and James Payton, an intimidating police detective portrayed by Ice Cube. In the original film, Ben attempts to impress the latter, who is also his girlfriend’s protective brother. To test him, James invites him on a high-stakes, 24-hour patrol through Atlanta, leading to a series of hilarious and action-packed encounters. The sequel expands the scope of their partnership, sending them to Miami as they work to dismantle a drug operation connected to criminal activity in Atlanta.
The potential return of the original cast and creative team showcases Universal’s confidence in the franchise’s lasting appeal, especially as audiences continue to embrace nostalgia-driven sequels. With Hart and Ice Cube’s on-screen chemistry remaining a major draw, Ride Along 3 could benefit from both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers discovering the series.
There is currently no official release date for Ride Along 3 at the time of this article's publication.
