US Virtual Embassy urges American citizens to leave Iran immediately

The US Virtual Embassy Iran issued a security alert on September 19, 2026, telling American citizens to get out of the country immediately. The warning pointed to escalating regional security risks, ongoing civil unrest, and significant disruptions to normal travel infrastructure as reasons to leave without delay.

The message carried a blunt subtext that’s worth paying attention to: if you’re an American in Iran right now, you’re on your own. The US government made clear that citizens should not expect assistance with their departure.

What the advisory actually says

Iran currently holds a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” designation, the most severe warning the State Department issues. That designation has been in place for years, driven by persistent risks of terrorism, arbitrary detention, and civil instability.

This latest alert specifically recommends that Americans still in Iran consider land routes to Armenia or Turkey as their safest exit options. The advisory also stressed the importance of enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, known as STEP, which provides security updates to registered travelers. And it included a warning that simply displaying a US passport can increase the risk of detention.

For dual nationals, Iranian regulations require dual citizens to use their Iranian passports for departure, adding a layer of bureaucratic friction to an already dangerous exit process.

A country without a US embassy since 1980

The United States has not maintained a physical embassy in Iran since the 1979-1980 hostage crisis, when Iranian militants stormed the US Embassy in Tehran and held 52 American diplomats and citizens for 444 days. In the absence of a US diplomatic presence, Switzerland’s embassy in Tehran serves as a protecting power for American citizens, providing limited emergency services. The Virtual Embassy, operated online, serves as the primary channel for the US government to communicate with Americans in Iran.

This latest alert follows a pattern of escalating warnings. Previous advisories were issued on January 13 and February 6, 2026, both of which highlighted massive public protests sweeping across the country and widespread internet restrictions imposed by Iranian authorities. Communication blackouts have made it harder for citizens to coordinate travel plans or even receive security updates from the Virtual Embassy.
