Welcome To Space College: How Do You Join Starfleet Academy On Star Trek?

The latest "Star Trek" series, "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy," debuted in January of 2026, but it has already been canceled, with plans to air its second and final season sometime in 2027. It's a pity it didn't last very long, as a series set at Starfleet Academy has been a long time coming. One of the "Star Trek" head honchos, Harve Bennett, was brainstorming a "Starfleet Academy" series way back in the early 1980s, and the franchise has drifted that direction many times. Even a tie-in novel series was set there. 

For any neophytes, Starfleet Academy is the rigorous, stringently academic four-year university that must be attended by any and all aspiring Starfleet officers. First mentioned in the original "Star Trek" pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before," Starfleet Academy is mentioned often by characters across all the "Star Trek" shows, as it is a common scholastic experience that almost every single one of the franchise's uniformed characters has had. Some personnel on Starfleet vessels haven't been to Starfleet Academy and merely serve as enlisted workers — engineering chiefs, yeomen, and security officers, for instance. But everyone in a senior position has had to go through one of the toughest college experiences imaginable. 

Throughout the franchise, there have been multiple mentions of the types of classes that officers need to take at Starfleet Academy. Naturally, one has to know astrophysics, basic warp design, engineering, and xenolinguistics, but one must also take courses in probability mechanics, interspecies ethics, advanced subspace geometry, and even comparative xenomythology.

How does one apply to Starfleet Academy? It seems that's just as hard.

The application process for Starfleet Academy was dramatized in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Coming of Age." In that episode, it's stated that there's a multi-part exam one must pass in order to be admitted into the Academy, and all Federation citizens are eligible to take it. Non-citizens are also welcome (a Ferengi named Nog was able to apply on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"), although it seems that there would be additional bureaucratic shuffling to make that happen. Those who have scored highly on preliminary tests are then welcome to take a proper entrance exam, although those exams can be held in sporadic locations in addition to San Francisco, where Starfleet Academy is located. 

The entrance exam is long, arduous, and covers several disciplines. Potential cadets are tested on topics like physics and dynamic spatial relationships, of course, but are also grilled on their command decisions and the way they get along with other species. Sometimes portions of the test can come at unexpected times, allowing the test masters to gauge how well two species react to one another. 

In "Coming of Age," there is also a psych evaluation wherein the young Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) is told to wait in an empty room until the exam begins. Before it does, though, there is an explosion outside the door. Wesley runs out and sees that people are pinned under flaming rubble, unable to escape. He only has time to save one of them. Naturally, the explosion was staged, and the crisis was a mere test of Wesley's quick thinking. Starfleet officers will, of course, have to make such life-or-death decisions. Wesley didn't pass, and was deeply rattled by the experience.

That psych test is also reflected in the famed Kobayashi Maru test mentioned in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." That test is a simulation wherein cadets, posing as a captain, have to rescue a ship that is under attack. The cadets don't know, however, that the simulation is designed to be lost, testing their character and resolve in an unwinnable situation. 

"Coming of Age" also noted that one has to wait a full year before being allowed to apply again. Given how rigorous the process is, it's surprising anyone gets in at all. 

Once in, Academy cadets are kept very, very busy. In addition to the courses listed above, one can join extracurricular activities — athletics and the like — and also join specialized pilot squadrons. To give them hands-on experience, some Starfleet vessels allow cadets to serve on their crews. The USS Athena on "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" seems built for cadet training exclusively. "Starfleet Academy," it should be noted, is set many centuries after the events of "Next Generation," after the Federation had fallen apart and slowly re-entered a state of reconstruction. Because there was no testing infrastructure, though, admissions appeared to be more lenient in the 32nd century. (This was fine, given the premise of the series.)

After four years, a cadet graduates and is granted the rank of ensign. After that, they can take a bridge officer's exam specifically to be on the senior staff on a starship. They may also want to go to medical school to become a ship doctor, or tactical school to be a weapons specialist. They can attend command school to get on track to be a captain. Starfleet careers are open to all takers, provided one does piles of hard work.
