Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is now playing in theaters worldwide, and while that is the format that the filmmaker most wants people to experience the movie in, its availability on streaming and other at-home options are still important. As one of the biggest advocates for the theaters, Nolan has always made his movies with the big screen in mind, even as Hollywood and consumers have become more accepting of streaming.
The Odyssey is no different. It is the first movie to be shot entirely with IMAX 70mm cameras, with the film designed to give audiences a greater sense of the scope and scale by watching it in this format, despite the limited IMAX 70mm theater list. This is something that will not be replicable at home, even as Nolan's movies tend to keep the 1.78:1 IMAX ratio on Blu-ray and 4K discs.
Universal and Nolan want to drive everyone to see the movie in theaters and contribute to The Odyssey's box office. That's part of the reason why no parties involved have already discussed its planned releases on digital, physical media, or streaming.
The good news is that we can narrow down the timing of these releases so everyone eager to watch The Odyssey again or for the first time at home can know when to look for it.
When Will The Odyssey Be Available To Rent Or Buy On Digital?
An official The Odyssey digital release date isn't confirmed, but we do know that it won't be for at least 32 days. Universal announced at the start of 2026 that all of its movies will play exclusively in theaters for five weekends, at the minimum. They've stayed true to that for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Disclosure Day, and more. Nolan's epic will likely take much longer, though.
The filmmaker tends to work more extensive exclusive theatrical windows into the deals for his movies, a perk of being arguably the most influential director in Hollywood right now. Universal waited 123 days to put Nolan's last movie, Oppenheimer, on digital. A similar gap is expected here. That gives The Odyssey a projected digital release date of November 17.
When Will The Odyssey Be Available On Blu-Ray, DVD, & 4K?
Physical media collectors looking to own every Nolan movie will need to acquire The Odyssey when it comes out on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K. Universal hasn't confirmed the specifics of this date either, but a long wait is in store if they treat the film like Oppenheimer.
While most movies get a physical media release after hitting digital, Oppenheimer became available in both forms simultaneously. The four-month gap is fairly standard for Nolan, as that's what Dunkirk and Interstellar also received. If Universal and Nolan have a similar arrangement in place, The Odyssey won't be available on Blu-ray, DVD, or 4K until November too.
These releases should contain all the bonus features that come with it on digital. Those who buy The Odyssey physically should also be treated to the taller IMAX ratio for its duration, not to mention have the ability to collect any limited-edition steelbooks.
When Will The Odyssey Be Available On Streaming?
Even though a date is not confirmed, The Odyssey will stream on Peacock at the appropriate time due to Universal distributing the epic. The studio's typical theatrical window schedule would suggest a mid-November launch, but that will not happen with Nolan. Just like with Oppenheimer, there will be a much longer wait for its streaming debut.
Universal waited 210 days to release Oppenheimer on Peacock, holding off on its streaming launch for six months and until after it had earned 13 Oscar nominations. A similar treatment for Nolan's new movie would give The Odyssey a streaming release date of February 12, 2027.
With the movie drawing record-setting business at the box office, there will be no rush from Universal or Nolan to make The Odyssey available elsewhere. Theaters will be the only place you can see it for months, so checking out local showtimes is the best option for anyone who doesn't want to wait so long.
