Deadline has reported that Nicholas Hoult will no longer be playing Professor Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s Harry Potter TV series. Harry Potter won’t premiere on HBO until this holiday season — season 1, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will premiere on December 25 — but Warner is already going full steam ahead with season 2. The second season will adapt the second book, Chamber of Secrets, so, naturally, they’ve been looking for the right actor to play Lockhart, who was previously played so brilliantly by Kenneth Branagh.

The news that Hoult would play Lockhart originally broke on August 11, but he’s already dropped out of the role. A different member of the HBO family, Kit Harington, best known for his turn as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, will instead play Lockhart, reprising his voice role from the all-star Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions released last year.

J.K. Rowling’s longstanding history of transphobia has made HBO’s Harry Potter series a point of controversy. Everyone loves those books, but a new adaptation means a new revenue stream for someone who’s actively harming a marginalized community. A lot of the creatives involved in the series have fielded questions from the press about where they align with Rowling’s views and where they stand on the controversy. But Hoult’s reason for dropping out apparently had nothing to do with the discourse around the show, just his own schedule.

The official reason given for Hoult’s exit from Harry Potter is scheduling conflicts. HBO had to work around two other projects that Hoult is filming right now, and they just couldn’t do it, so they released Hoult from his contract, reached out to Harington as a last-minute replacement, and he was excited to play Lockhart in live-action after playing the audiobook version.

Naturally, there’s been some speculation about whether the controversy had anything to do with this decision. But Hoult is one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood — he’s talented, loved by audiences, and consistently delivers — so he’s bound to have a packed schedule. It’s not all that hard to believe that he would be too busy to squeeze in a TV role.

Deadline claims that HBO couldn’t fit its schedule around two other projects that Hoult is working on. It’s easy to assume that one of those projects is the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, in which Hoult’s Lex Luthor is expected to have a much bigger role, but what’s the other one? How to Rob a Bank is in the can, and his role in CoComelon: The Movie is a voice role he could record in an afternoon. It’s possible that an opportunity came up for Hoult to work with one of his auteur collaborators, like Robert Eggers or Yorgos Lanthimos, and he chose to do that instead of Harry Potter. Maybe Tom Ford’s period drama Cry to Heaven needs reshoots.

Actors Are Continuing To Face Criticism For Joining HBO's Harry Potter Series

Usually, when an actor takes a role in a TV show, they don’t have to justify that decision in the court of public opinion. But this isn’t just any old TV show; this is Harry Potter. Every time an actor joins this franchise, there’s going to be some level of controversy. John Lithgow, who’s playing Dumbledore in the new series, has said that he felt pressured to quit the show after signing on, and that he almost did.

Some version of that is bound to happen whenever a new actor joins this franchise, but there’s no evidence to suggest that that’s what happened with Hoult’s departure from HBO’s Harry Potter show. Sometimes, “scheduling conflicts” really are scheduling conflicts.
