Central to this division are forward-deployed engineers, commonly known as FDEs. These specialized professionals integrate directly within client operations to design, develop, and implement AI solutions from within the organization.

Google Cloud has committed to training up to 1,000 of these embedded engineers. Additionally, a select group of Google Cloud’s internal FDEs will collaborate with premier clients on a restricted engagement basis.

Accenture CEO Julie Sweet articulated the challenge directly: “AI is simple to try and hard to scale, and that’s the moment leaders are in right now.”

Following an Established Industry Pattern

Palantir pioneered the FDE approach, which has subsequently been adopted throughout the technology sector. OpenAI introduced its own professional services division, OpenAI Deployment Co., earlier this year. Anthropic operates its Applied AI division. Both Microsoft and Amazon Web Services have implemented comparable strategies in recent months.

Accenture and Google are effectively entering a competitive landscape that’s already significantly developed.

Operational Structure of the New Division

Operationally, Accenture positions specialized “pods” within client companies. Each pod comprises FDEs responsible for solution development, working alongside domain specialists, workflow analysts, and data scientists.

A representative engagement involved a pod tasked with automating invoice workflows. Throughout an eight to twelve week period, the team documented existing processes, connected enterprise data sources, and constructed a production-ready agentic AI system, accompanied by a comprehensive deployment strategy for organization-wide implementation.

After the FDE contingent completes their assignment, additional Accenture personnel assume responsibility for enterprise-wide deployment activities.

Before this announcement, Accenture maintained approximately 50,000 professionals with Google Cloud capabilities. This new division establishes an additional tier of specialized, certified competency beyond that foundation.

Sweet emphasized that Accenture’s extensive enterprise implementation experience provides a strategic advantage: “You have to know how you actually deploy a system in a big company.”

While Accenture and Google Cloud acknowledged that the new division represents a significant capital commitment, they chose not to disclose precise financial figures.
