Netflix has prematurely canceled plenty of shows over the years, but few cancellations still sting like Altered Carbon. Not only was the 2018-2020 series truly exceptional sci-fi in its own right, it was also the best live-action cyberpunk TV show put to screen so far.
There have been plenty of cyberpunk shows, but few captured the genre's core themes as effectively as Altered Carbon. The Netflix show explored themes like transhumanism and technological excess with a neon-drenched dystopian aesthetic that felt authentic to everything that makes cyberpunk beloved. Since its cancellation, there has been a genuine void for fans of the genre. Thankfully, Apple TV+ appears ready to fill it with its upcoming adaptation of Neuromancer.
Based on William Gibson's landmark 1984 novel, Neuromancer follows a washed-up hacker recruited for one last dangerous job in a futuristic world of unchecked corporate power. The loss of Altered Carbon left cyberpunk fans without a solid live-action series to obsess over, but Neuromancer may finally make up for Netflix giving it the axe.
Neuromancer Can Be The Definitive Cyberpunk Show Altered Carbon Almost Became
When Altered Carbon debuted in 2018, it generated immediate excitement among cyberpunk fans. The Netflix show explored staple themes like digital immortality and the commodification of identity in a visually stunning world full of towering cities and neon-soaked streets. For many, it finally felt as though cyberpunk had found its definitive live-action television series. Unfortunately, that promise never reached its full potential thanks to Netflix canceling Altered Carbon after season 2 in 2020.
The years that followed the cancellation did little to ease the pain. Several TV shows looked as though they could take Altered Carbon's place, such as Prime Video's The Peripheral (which, like Neuromancer, adapts a William Gibson novel). Sadly, it too was canceled before its story could conclude, this time after only a single season. That is what makes Neuromancer so exciting. Finally, there appears to be a TV show that could step up and tell a complete cyberpunk story the way Altered Carbon should have been allowed to.
The fact Neuromancer is an Apple TV+ project is a solid assurance that cyberpunk fans won’t have to fear another early cancellation, as the streamer has a reputation for seeing even its most ambitious shows through until the end. What’s more, Apple TV+ has already proven that it understands sci-fi adaptations. Foundation and Silo already proved Apple can translate dense, cerebral sci-fi stories from page to screen without losing the spiritual essence of the source material. This bodes incredibly well for Neuromancer, which is adapting a definitive cyberpunk text.
All in all, Neuromancer is perfectly positioned to become the flagship live-action cyberpunk series that finally pushes the genre into the mainstream just as Altered Carbon should have been. It adapts one of the most influential novels in cyberpunk history and is being developed by a streamer that has shown far greater commitment to prestige sci-fi TV than many of its competitors. For fans still mourning Altered Carbon, that combination offers genuine reason for optimism.
Apple TV's Neuromancer Adaptation Is Arriving At Just The Right Time
Apple TV+'s Neuromancer is far from the first attempt to adapt William Gibson's novel. Hollywood has been trying to bring the story to screens for decades. As far back as the late 1980s, filmmakers were exploring adaptations, with numerous directors, actors, and studios attached over the years. The fact that Neuromancer is finally getting a successful live-action adaptation after such a long journey is exciting in itself. However, its timing is even more significant because it’s arriving during a TV cyberpunk renaissance.
Several major cyberpunk properties are returning to screens in 2026. Prime Video’s new Ghost in the Shell series, The Ghost in the Shell, brought one of the genre's most iconic franchises back with a new, true-to-roots anime. Blade Runner 2099 is also on the way, expanding the world established by Ridley Scott's seminal cyberpunk film. Meanwhile, Netflix has renewed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners for a second season, continuing one of the most successful modern interpretations of the genre.
For years, cyberpunk felt strangely underrepresented on TV despite its enormous cultural influence. That is finally beginning to change. A new generation of series are once again embracing the genre's timely themes of corporate overreach and technoparanoia. All in all, there could hardly be a better moment for Neuromancer to arrive.
Not only is interest in cyberpunk growing again, but Apple TV+'s series is adapting one of the most important literary works the genre has ever produced. William Gibson’s Neuromancer helped define cyberpunk in the first place, and now it has the opportunity to become the movement's definitive TV show just as the genre enters an exciting new era on the small screen.
