Canada proposes social media ban for teens, allows tech firm exemptions
Canada just told Big Tech to keep its hands off the kids, sort of. The country introduced sweeping digital safety legislation on June 10 that would prohibit social media platforms from letting anyone under 16 create an account.
But here’s the thing. The law comes with a built-in escape hatch: platforms that can demonstrate they have effective protections against harms like bullying and self-harm content can apply for exemptions.
What the legislation actually does
The bill creates a new digital regulator whose job is to set safety standards for online platforms operating in Canada. It also introduces specific rules governing AI chatbots.
Companies that don’t comply face real financial consequences. Penalties can reach up to 3% of a firm’s global revenue or a maximum of C$10 million, whichever stings more.
Why now, and why this approach
According to Angus Reid polling, 75% of Canadians support a ban on social media access for individuals under 16.
Canada is also following a trail blazed by Australia, which enacted its own under-16 social media ban set to take effect in December 2025. Several European nations have been pursuing age-verification measures as well.
Previous discussions in Canada had focused on restricting access for users under 14, a narrower scope that apparently didn’t satisfy legislators or the public. The jump to 16 reflects an escalation in concern about online safety for minors across a broader age range.
What this means for investors and the tech industry
Platforms will need to invest significantly in age-verification technology to meet these standards. Current methods range from government ID checks to facial age estimation powered by AI.
The exemption framework creates a secondary competitive dynamic worth watching. Platforms that invest early in child safety infrastructure could gain a regulatory advantage over competitors, maintaining access to younger demographics in Canada while rivals get shut out.
