One of Stephen King's best ongoing adaptations is all set to return in one month. This time around, the show in question will extend beyond the books and enter a completely uncharted narrative territory. While stretching beyond the source material does not usually work well for most shows, the Stephen King TV series has immense potential going into its next season.

Based on Stephen King's book of the same name, The Institute season 1 premiered to mixed reviews from viewers and critics. While many appreciated its loyalty to its source material, others could not help but criticize it for its inability to rise above familiar tropes and storytelling devices. However, most viewers agreed that the show delivered some intriguing ideas that could be expanded in another season.

In the past, Stephen King TV shows like Under the Dome have suffered after attempting to go beyond the original book. The Institute season 2 could suffer some similar setbacks, but if it plays its cards right and leverages some of the better aspects of its predecessor, it could significantly elevate the existing story.

The Institute Season 2 Is Significantly Raising The Stakes

The Institute season 1 almost came off as a Hawkins Lab spin-off of Stranger Things. It primarily focused on the atrocities the children of the titular "Institute" were subjected to in the name of serving the greater good. In season 2, however, the show is set to raise the stakes even higher. The show will take Stephen King's story to a global level, revealing how many titular "institutes" exist in its world.

It will also disclose how far bigger forces are at play, and the central characters will have a hard time taking down the entire system that promotes the torture of children with psychic abilities. Like season 1, The Institute season 2 will also be packed with subtle references to other Stephen King works. At the same time, it will also hopefully rise above its Stranger Things comparisons.

In its ending moments, The Institute season 1 hinted at how its main character, Luke, was starting to develop precognition abilities. His power to see the future could become a major driver of season 2's plot, turning the series into an even more gripping sci-fi thriller. While The Institute can still fall into genre tropes and conventions in season 2, it will hopefully focus on progressing the more intriguing bits from season 1.

The Institute Has The Potential To Become As Big As Stranger Things

Considering the reception of The Institute season 1, it still seems to have a long way to go to be able to match Stranger Things' legacy. Stranger Things' ending might have been divisive, but the Netflix sci-fi show consistently earned almost unanimous acclaim in its first few seasons.

There were no dull moments in the Netflix series even though it drew heavily from many well-known horror tropes and coming-of-age stories.

The Institute, in contrast, struggled to rise above genre conventions despite having compelling character beats and a steady storytelling pace. In season 2, however, The Institute can truly etch a distinct identity for itself if it leans more into its ambitious sci-fi ideas surrounding the constant battle between fate and free will and the moral implications of altering the present for a better potential future.

If it manages to do this, it will not only establish itself as one of the better takes on Stephen King's works but also as one of the best ongoing sci-fi horror shows on streaming right now.
