It's The End Of An Era For The Witcher

Netflix’s The Witcher is preparing its fifth season, and not only will it be the end of the show, but it will also mark the end of an era for the franchise. Netflix has explored various genres through its original TV shows, with some of them now ranking among the best of all time, but it has mostly stood out for its fantasy content. One of Netflix’s most successful (but also divisive) fantasy TV shows to date is The Witcher, based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel series of the same name.

The Witcher had a strong start in 2019, with praise for its performances, narrative style (even if a bit confusing), and production value. Unfortunately, The Witcher’s decline started in season 2 as a result of creative choices that hurt many characters, particularly Yennefer (Anya Chalotra). Seasons 3 and 4 of The Witcher were major improvements, with the fourth being the debut of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, and now the show is preparing for its fifth and final season.

Netflix’s The Witcher has two more books left to cover and just one more season left, so it has some big challenges ahead so it can give proper closure to Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri (Freya Allan). Of course, season 5 will be the end of an era for the Netflix show, but it goes beyond being a closing chapter, as it will have a bigger impact on the franchise.

Netflix’s The Witcher Season 5 Is the End Of Live-Action Witcher Adaptations

Netflix’s The Witcher isn’t the first live-action adaptation of Sapkowski’s novels, but it is the first English-language adaptation. In 2001, The Witcher was adapted into a live-action movie and a TV series in 2002, both Polish adaptations. The Netflix show arrived to revive the franchise on TV, and though it has had many flaws, it’s an overall entertaining and exciting show for both fans of this universe and those unfamiliar with the books and video games.

The success of the Netflix show led to its expansion with prequels, starting with the animated movie Nightmare of the Wolf. The movie follows a young Vesemir (voiced by Theo James) and the events that led to the fall of Kaer Morhen. Nightmare of the Wolf was an even bigger success than the main show, and made way for other expansions. Next was the live-action prequel series Blood Origin, which was a failure with critics and general audiences.

A second animated movie, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, was released in 2025, but it didn’t have the same success as Nightmare of the Wolf. Last but not least was the feature-length special The Rats: A Witcher Tale, which didn’t have the desired success. With the main show ending, in addition to the failure of Blood Origin and The Rats, the possibility of more live-action shows from the world of Netflix’s The Witcher will also end.

The Witcher Franchise Will Continue After The Netflix Show Is Over

It’s important to remember that the end of the world of Netflix’s The Witcher isn’t the end of the franchise. At the time of writing, there are no more Witcher books lined up for the near future, with the most recent one released in 2024, but the video game branch continues to expand. The Witcher has found great success in the world of video games, and it all began in 2007 with the game of the same name.

The Witcher currently has three main games, three expansion packs, and seven spinoffs, but there are more in development. In 2022, a fourth game was announced to be in development, and it’s intended to be the first in a new trilogy. The Witcher IV will have Ciri as its playable character instead of Geralt, and, at the time of writing, it doesn’t have a release date yet. The Witcher might need a break from live-action adaptations after season 5 is released, but it can return to them and learn from the mistakes of the Netflix show.
