Rhea Seehorn Uses Her Own Acceptance Speech to Hail the Team Behind ‘Pluribus’: ‘Performances Don’t Happen in a Vacuum’

Pluribus,” Vince Gilligan’s thrilling Apple TV series, sees Rhea Seehorn give the performance of a lifetime as Carol Sturka, a misanthropic author who becomes the mouthpiece for the importance of human individuality after the world is irrevocably changed by an alien assimilation plot. But, accepting the Performance Award at IndieWire Honors on Thursday June 4, Seehorn was very clear that her work on the show was a collective effort.

“I know everyone in this room — by the way, I’m trying to meet all of you that are winning awards, but also your teams that support you because everyone in this room knows these performances, including the one that I’m being nominated for tonight, they don’t happen in a vacuum,” Seehorn said in her speech. “The talent and the kindness and the support, the encouragement that I get on my sets is a massive part of how I do what I do, and how I get better every day, because I’m allowed to challenge myself, I’m allowed to take risks, I’m allowed to, you know, fall flat on my face, and try something, and so I just want to acknowledge those people.”

Seehorn, a working actor since the ’90s who broke through and received critical acclaim in 2015 when she was cast in “Better Call Saul,” began her speech by praising IndieWire and thanking the publication for the award. She said that she had been reading the site from its inception, as it celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

“Thank you, IndieWire, for this,” Seehorn said. “Your critical writing about television and film that I have followed for a long time, honestly, 30 years, you guys have managed to somehow be astute while still being humane, and I really appreciate that.”

Seehorn continued by thanking several people involved in “Pluribus.” She thanked Gilligan for creating the role of Carol for her to play, as well as the crew, writers, directors, editors, producers, casting team, and background actors who brought the complex production to life. She named several of her cast members from “Pluribus” — including Karolina Wydra, Carlos-Manuel Vesga, Samba Schutte, and Miriam Shore — before continuing on to thank her manager and agents, as well as her family for their support of her over the years.

I am a die-hard believer that one of the best things about what we all do is a collaborative art form, not a solo egoist venture, and we are better, every single one of us, our work is better because of the contributions of others,” Seehorn said. “If you are honoring me for a performance, you are honoring everybody that I just mentioned.”

This season’s IndieWire Honors ceremony took place on Thursday, June 4, in Los Angeles with an intimate cocktail reception and ceremony. Stay tuned for more exclusive editorial and social content from the night, including video interviews, outtakes, and more.
