SpaceX Sends NASA Crew-13 Toward ISS
SpaceX launched NASA’s Crew-13 mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on Thursday. A Falcon 9 rocket carried the Crew Dragon spacecraft Grace toward the International Space Station. The mission includes four crew members who will remain aboard the orbital laboratory for about six months.
NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins and Luke Delaney joined Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov on the flight. Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk also joined the crew for the long-duration mission. Together, the astronauts will support Expedition 75 operations and research aboard the International Space Station.
The launch added another crewed mission to SpaceX’s growing record of NASA transportation services. SpaceX developed Crew Dragon under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program for regular astronaut missions to orbit. The company now uses Falcon 9 and Dragon for regular human spaceflight missions from Florida.
Google Satellite Launch Expands SpaceX Missions
SpaceX also carried Google’s Project Suncatcher satellite into orbit aboard its Transporter-18 rideshare mission Thursday. Google developed the prototype to test whether large-scale artificial intelligence computing can operate effectively in space. The experiment will examine Google’s tensor processing units under conditions found outside Earth’s atmosphere.
Google plans to study how its TPUs operate after the satellite reaches its planned orbital environment. The project gives Google data about hardware performance, energy use, communication, and computing beyond terrestrial data centers. SpaceX provided the launch service through its established Transporter program for smaller satellites.
Transporter missions allow several customers to place spacecraft into orbit during a single Falcon 9 launch. SpaceX has used the rideshare program to serve commercial companies, governments, universities, and research groups. Consequently, the program has expanded Falcon 9’s role across commercial and scientific satellite missions.
Starship Deploys 26 Starlink V3 Satellites
Earlier this week, SpaceX placed Starship into Earth orbit and deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites. The spacecraft completed the deployment despite losing one engine during its ascent toward orbit. The flight marked another major test for SpaceX’s largest and most powerful launch system.
Starship remains central to SpaceX’s plans for expanding the Starlink satellite internet network. The larger vehicle can carry significantly more payload than Falcon 9 during individual missions. Therefore, successful Starship operations could support larger Starlink deployments as SpaceX expands network capacity.
Starlink represents SpaceX’s largest operating business and depends on regular launches to maintain its satellite constellation. Meanwhile, SpaceX also operated Dragon, Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Starship during the busy week. The launches demonstrated activity across SpaceX’s human spaceflight, satellite, rideshare, and Starlink operations.
