Star Wars' 14 Most Intelligent Characters, Ranked

Across the Star Wars timeline, different characters have had different opportunities to showcase their intelligence. Some characters have created massive, galaxy-altering conspiracies by manipulating others from the shadows, others proved themselves strategic geniuses on the battlefield, and others still have mounted resistance to overwhelming forces using whatever resources they had.

In ranking the smartest Star Wars characters, it's necessary to define what intelligence actually is. The three main categories we'll be using as criteria are wisdom, strategy, and ingenuity. A character who can make a strong plan is smart, but one who can adapt on the fly when a plan doesn't go perfectly is also just as intelligent. Luckily, Star Wars has plenty of examples of every kind of intelligence out there.

14 Maul

Though it may be surprising based on his depiction in the Star Wars movies, Maul is one of the franchise's most brilliant characters ever. He started out as an apprentice to and puppet for Darth Sidious, but Maul became a force unto himself in later installments. In The Clone Wars, for example, Maul was able to suss out Palpatine's plan to overthrow the Republic and even take steps to prepare for Order 66 ahead of time, something only a handful of people could do.

Predicting Order 66 is also just the tip of the iceberg with Maul. He staged a takeover of several different criminal syndicates and established himself as a Shadow Lord of the galaxy's underworld not once but twice. He overthrew the ruling government of Mandalore and established himself as their shadow ruler. He was conniving enough to sway Devon Izara to the dark side of the Force, and he very nearly did the same with Ezra Bridger. Maul's intelligence was, however, limited by his endless rage and unquenchable thirst for revenge, which often spurred him to act rashly.

13 Galen Erso

Perhaps the most technically intelligent person in all of Star Wars is Galen Erso, the mastermind of the Death Star. Galen's engineering mind was quite literally irreplaceable, so much so that Director Orson Krennic had to hunt Erso down and kidnap him, forcing him to complete work on his super weapon. That fact alone proves that Galen was the greatest engineering mind in the entire Galactic Empire, which is proof enough that he's one of Star Wars' smartest.

Galen Erso didn't stop there, however. He also worked in secret for decades to undermine the Empire without them even knowing. Erso built and implemented a fatal flaw into the Death Star, the very same exhaust port that Luke Skywalker used to destroy it. He planned his treachery out to the most minute detail and even managed to get the plans to the Rebel Alliance. Galen Erso's planning and foresight were almost as astonishing as his engineering prowess.

12 Dedra Meero

Imperial Security Bureau lieutenant Dedra Meero may have been a cog in the Empire's fascist regime, but she was a brilliant cog. Across the years Andor covered, Meero rose through the ranks of the ISB and became the organization's only female supervisor. She orchestrated the Ghorman Massacre, ran a years-long investigation into Axis that eventually uncovered the most pivotal cell in the Rebel Alliance, and played the political game nearly perfectly, until she made a fatal mistake.

There are quite a few master manipulators in Star Wars, but Dedra Meero deserves to be called one of the best. She wrapped Syril Karn around her finger, she forced an entire planet to do exactly what she intended for them, and she very nearly destroyed the Rebellion before it even began. Dedra's biggest weakness is that she was part of the Empire, a ruthless machine that didn't care about her and didn't value her brilliance. Her least intelligent moment was not realizing that her ambition was too great, and that the wheels of fascism were going to crush her for it.

11 Count Dooku

Count Dooku is primarily known for being a pawn in Darth Sidious' long game, but he was much more than that. Yes, Dooku didn't realize that he was just a tool to be discarded at Palpatine's earliest convenience until it was far too late, but he had proven himself intelligent long before Revenge of the Sith. Dooku was the linchpin that both the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Clone Wars as a whole revolved around, and he was one of the only people who could have accomplished what he did.

As a Jedi, Dooku saw the cracks in the Order's foundation long before anyone else did. As a Sith, he was able to manipulate the Jedi from within and lay the groundwork for the creation of the Grand Army of the Republic completely in secret. He was a master politician, manipulating both the CIS and their allies for years. His goals and vision for changing the galaxy and the Jedi Order were also quite wise, and if he had gotten his way, he probably would have changed the galaxy for the better. The only thing holding him back was that he trusted the wrong man.

10 Padmé Amidala

Padmé Amidala was yet another brilliant Star Wars character with a fatal flaw: her love life. Over the course of her life, Padmé was one of the most influential politicians in the entire galaxy. She started out as Queen of Naboo, guided the planet through the invasion by the Trade Federation, and abdicated the throne in peace. She then became a massively influential senator in the Galactic Senate, one who stood as a rare beacon of reason in dark times.

Padmé's political career is the best display of her intelligence, but she also had several other kinds of intelligence. She was a phenomenal orator with salient observations like, "So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause," that highlighted her wisdom. She could think on her feet constantly, like in Attack of the Clones, and she was even a capable covert agent in The Clone Wars. If she had fallen in love with anyone but Anakin Skywalker, she would have been an incomparable force for good.

9 Mon Mothma

Perhaps the greatest politician in all of Star Wars is Mon Mothma. Across decades of the franchise's timeline, Mothma held three different but hugely influential positions of power. She was one of the most influential senators of all time, she later became the leader and political figurehead of the Rebel Alliance, and, after the war, became the first Chancellor of the New Republic. In all three of those positions, she changed the entire galaxy for the better.

There's a lot to be said about Mon Mothma's political career. She managed to fight the Empire's creeping fascism for years, she delivered one of the most important speeches in the galaxy's history, she turned the Rebel Alliance from a ragtag group of extremists into a legitimate political entity, and she guided the New Republic as best as she could. On top of that, she also secretly funded the Rebels for years without ever drawing attention to herself. It's safe to say that without Mon Mothma's political sensibilities and guile, the Rebellion never would have happened.

8 Luthen Rael

Luthen Rael is one of the most complicated characters in all of Star Wars, but one thing about him is clear: he's a genius. For years, Luthen acted as Axis, the mastermind of political rebellion against the Empire that the ISB deemed their number one target. During that time, he conducted covert operations, managed a network of spies that was so secretive that individual operatives didn't even know about one another, and infiltrated the highest ranks of the Empire.

Luthen was a master manipulator who "condemned" himself, in his own words, through his complicated morality. He wasn't afraid to sacrifice an entire planet, Ghorman, to further the Rebellion's cause. He trained some of the greatest Rebels to ever live, including Kleya, Cassian Andor, and Vel Sartha. He orchestrated Mon Mothma's rescue from the senate and, most importantly, he did it right under the ISB's nose, posing as an antiques dealer on Coruscant for years. Luthen Rael was a mastermind, through and through.

7 Kleya Marki

Luthen Rael was a mastermind, but Kleya Marki was still the brains of the Axis operation. Kleya did everything Luthen did, from managing the spy network to hiding in plain sight, but she never got caught. Kleya also had a much more hands-on approach, speaking directly with operatives and managing agents on a personal level, something Luthen wasn't good at. She was also doing everything Luthen did with half of his experience, being as young as she was.

What really sets Kleya apart from Luthen, however, is the endings of their stories. After Luthen failed to kill himself, Kleya executed a solo mission to infiltrate the most heavily guarded hospital in the galaxy. She fought bravely, engineered Imperial officers expertly, and successfully managed to kill Luthen and save the Rebellion in the process. Kleya had all the planning and strategic brilliance of Luthen combined with the covert abilities of Cassian Andor. Those two facts make her one of the most brilliant people in the entire franchise.

6 Saw Gerrera

Though he never operated on the same scale as Luthen or Kleya, Saw Gerrera was one of the smartest Rebels who ever lived. Saw proved his intelligence as a guerrilla fighter rather than as a spymaster. He fought the Empire for nearly two decades and managed to stay hidden for most of that time despite being outright hostile and conducting military strikes. He also commanded a small but elite group of fighters that were incredibly loyal to him.

Saw Gerrera often gets overlooked because of his paranoia and incredibly distrusting attitude, but that paranoia was also incredibly justified. It kept Saw and his Partisans safe on numerous occasions, it kept them in the fight for years, and it slowly whittled away at the Empire's ability to find him. On top of his feats as a guerrilla fighter, Saw also kept Jyn Erso safe, one of his men informed Cassian Andor about the Death Star plans, and he was utterly pivotal in the early days of the Galactic Civil War.

5 Leia Organa

Leia Organa was something of a jack of all trades, but she was also very nearly a master of them all as well. Over the years, Leia worked as a prominent senator for and princess of Alderaan, as a major leader in the Rebel Alliance, as a major senator in the New Republic and eventually as the leader of the Populist party, and lastly as a general in the Resistance. The sheer breadth of roles she performed across her life is proof of how intelligent she was.

Leia didn't have the same political skills Padmé Amidala or Mon Mothma did, but she was still very influential. She saw the rise of the First Order coming before anyone else did, and she mounted a citizen's militia when the New Republic wouldn't act. As a younger woman, she proved that she could adapt to changing circumstances, stand toe-to-toe with major leaders like Grand Moff Tarkin, and she even studied the ways of the Jedi, for a time. Leia was beauty and brains combined in perfect harmony.
