If you’re a fan of the Zelda experience and would love to experience it in a roguelike RPG style, Steam has just the free game you’ll want to add to your library.
The popular storefront’s backend has revealed the next title set to be featured in a Free-to-Keep Promotion for the month of August—and it’s none other than Developer Digital Sun’s (and Publisher 11 bit studios’) Moonlighter. It’s worth noting that PC gamers can currently grab Moonlighter at a whopping 85 percent off, all thanks to the ongoing Summer Sale. Originally priced at $19.99, it’s available on Steam for just $2.99 until July 9.
For the impatient, the Steam Summer Sale promotion is undoubtedly a great deal. But if you choose to wait until next month, you can grab Moonlighter for free, meaning you can skip paying even the mere $3 it costs right now. If you ask me, I’d point you toward the Free-to-Keep Promotion. After all, the wait will end with a free game in your collection. But if you’re desperate for a gem to play this weekend or next, most of us wouldn’t regret paying the few dollars either.
In case you’re wondering why fans, including me, love Moonlighter, it’s a feel-good game you just don’t want to miss. As much as it gives me major Zelda vibes with its combat, dungeons, puzzles, and whatnot, the game also borrows intriguing elements from other hits like Binding of Isaac (the roguelike features) and Stardew Valley (the charming pixel-art aesthetic and satisfying sense of progression).
For context, Moonlighter takes you on a fulfilling yet challenging journey as you play as Will, a humble shopkeeper who dreams of being a legendary hero. You run your own shop during the day, selling the treasures recovered from dangerous dungeons. As part of this business, you set prices, manage inventory, and earn gold to grow your business. You also get to explore procedurally generated dungeons at night, filled with monsters, traps, and valuable loot. Every expedition has its risks and rewards, and you must be ready for everything.
The game has you fight through fast-paced, Zelda-style combat and rewarding progression, allowing you to upgrade your weapons, armor, and gear as you become more powerful. As you progress, you can spend money to upgrade your town, unlocking new merchants and services to make future adventures easier. Whether you’re a roguelike veteran or a casual RPG fan, there’s a lot to love in Moonlighter, including its relaxing visuals and soundtrack and addictive gameplay loop of exploring, looting, selling, and upgrading. And when you’re done with the original experience, there’s a sequel too.
Steam usually offers multiple games for free every month, and Moonlighter is the first one in line for August, according to Steamdb—although this is yet to be announced officially. More free games are likely to be announced, so if you’re not fond of this genre, don’t be disappointed just yet.
If you’re looking for free games this month or want something to play till Moonlighter drops, there are two titles you can try your hand at, including The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante Chapter 1&2, a hardcore story-rich RPG, and Yet Another Zombie Defense HD, a top-down arcade zombie shooter.
