While Millie Bobby Brown has been one of the biggest stars on Netflix for almost a decade now, the arrival of her next major movie on the streaming service will make history for the actor. The Stranger Things franchise catapulted many of its young stars to fame almost overnight. One of Netflix’s biggest movies in recent years, the animated family sports comedy GOAT, starred Lucas’s actor Caleb McLaughlin as the voice of its protagonist.
Meanwhile, Finn Wolfhard has parlayed his success in Stranger Things into a role in the Ghostbusters franchise, as well as a successful directorial debut, Hell of a Summer, that proved he is as adept at telling horror stories behind the camera as he is in front of it. Gaten Matarazzo’s stoner comedy Pizza Movie is one of 2026’s best sleeper hits, while Sadie Sink’s upcoming role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day proves she is arguably the franchise’s biggest emerging star.
However, it was Millie Bobby Brown who blew away critics back in 2016 with her performance in season 1, and the Stranger Things star has since gone on to become one of Netflix’s biggest names. While her roles in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong saw her venture into the multiplex, the popularity of the Stranger Things franchise and the Enola Holmes franchise, along with the dark fantasy Damsel, proves that the streaming service is home to her biggest hits.
Millie Bobby Brown's Enola Holmes Is One of Netflix’s Few Original Movie Trilogies
Beginning in 2020 with Enola Holmes, the Enola Holmes trilogy is one of many Sherlock Holmes re-imaginings to emerge after the success of BBC’s 2010 hit Sherlock. Based on the book series of the same name by Nancy Springer, Enola Holmes stars Brown as the sharp, bright, but defiant and rebellious title character, the little sister of Sherlock, who may well be his equal at the art of deduction.
With a starry supporting cast including Helena Bonham Carter, Sam Claflin, and Henry Cavill, Enola Holmes became a major hit on the streaming service and earned largely positive reviews upon release. 2022’s follow-up, Enola Holmes 2, didn’t adapt a specific book from the source series, but the sequel still enjoyed the same critical acclaim as its predecessor. Now, 2026’s upcoming Enola Holmes 3 is set to join To All the Boys, The Kissing Booth, and Fear Street as one of the only Netflix original movie trilogies.
Netflix’s Movie Trilogies All Have One Surprising Similarity
Image courtesy of Everett CollectionIf the franchises in that list sound like they have a lot in common, that’s because they do. To All The Boys, The Kissing Booth, Enola Holmes, and Fear Street are all based on books, however loosely, and are all aimed at teen viewers, with all of their stories centering on teen protagonists. Although there is a fourth Fear Street movie, 2025’s Prom Queen failed to earn the same critical acclaim as its predecessors and was only vaguely linked to the franchise’s established story.
The fact that all of Netflix’s completed original movie trilogies are based on books aimed at a teen and young adult audience highlights a surprising reality about the streaming service. While Netflix has a diverse array of original shows and movies, many of its biggest hits ever have been aimed squarely at teens. There is Tim Burton’s Addams Family re-imagining, Wednesday, which retells the familiar franchise’s story from the perspective of its teen daughter.
Then there is, of course, the Stranger Things franchise, whose first spinoff, Tales from ’85, even messed with the franchise’s timeline to hold onto the same original teen main characters. However, there is also 2025’s viral hit, Adolescence, a gripping, brutal crime drama that also centered on a teen protagonist. Thus, the completion of the Enola Holmes trilogy proves Netflix is arguably a more teen-centric streaming service than many viewers may have realized.
