After just two episodes, it is hard not to notice how The Boys season 5 already seems far better than its predecessor in more ways than one. The Boys season 4 was, by no means, a subpar addition to the Prime Video superhero franchise. However, compared to all other near-perfect installments of the series, it seemed a little underwhelming.
The Boys is one modern franchise that takes pride in delivering one epic installment after another. Even its spin-off, Gen V, has had an incredible two-season run, boasting an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%. Owing to this, when The Boys season 4 started showing signs of slowing down midway through its runtime, many viewers did not take it too well.
Fortunately, after one slightly underwhelming season, it looks like The Boys is already back on track. It may be too soon to conclude how The Boys will turn out in its final installment. However, after just two episodes, The Boys season 5 has already reestablished everything that made it so appealing in its early arcs, setting it up to become one of the best installments of the Prime Video sci-fi franchise.
The Boys Season 5’s First Two Episodes Prove Its Creators Have Learned From Season 4’s Mistakes
The Boys season 4's ending moments were praised for setting up high stakes for season 5. However, the narrative road that led to the compelling finale was rather bumpy. Many story threads in season 4 seemed stagnant where Hughie and the team only seemed to survive because of plot armor. It almost seemed like The Boys season 4 was stalling its story to save the best bits for its finale or season 5.
Even the show's satire felt a little too on-the-nose in season 4 instead of being sharp and subtle.
The Boys season 4, like previous seasons, had its moments of gross-out humor and "WTF" moments. For instance, the human centipede scene and Tek Knight's whole basement sequence with Hughie were quite graphic. However, it was hard not to deny that they felt forced and were only introduced to further stretch the boundaries of shock value.
Another issue with season 4 was that it was packed with way too many filler story arcs that added little heft to the overarching storyline. Fortunately, unlike season 4, The Boys season 5 is focused and cohesive in the first two episodes itself. In just two episodes, it has killed off one major character (A-Train) and nearly eradicated Soldier Boy soon after introducing him.
Homelander, too, seems more erratic than ever, while Butcher and the Boys are deadset on finding a way to use the supe virus without committing genocide. A strong sense of urgency looms over all of them in season 5's opening arc. Despite the high stakes and seriousness of the story, though, season 5 is hilarious in the weirdest ways possible.
In just two episodes, The Boys season 5 has not only drawn subtle political satire that parallels real-world politics but has also parodied Marvel and DC superheroes in the most creative ways possible. With such an incredible start, The Boys season 5 is on the right path to make up for season 4's shortcomings.
The Boys Season 5’s Reviews Suggest It Will Only Get Better
After just two episodes, it may be a little too soon to predict whether The Boys season 5 will stick the landing. However, the show's new installment's almost unanimous acclaim suggests it will become one of the best seasons of the franchise. The Boys season 5 currently boasts a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%.
Only season 3 previously touched the 98% critics' score mark on Rotten Tomatoes, cementing season 5's reputation as a standout addition to the franchise.
Many shows, like Stranger Things and Game of Thrones, have previously stumbled in their final installments after having strong runs. Owing to this, it is relieving that The Boys will be ending on a strong note even though it took a few missteps in season 4.
