The Legend of Zelda is 40 years old this year, and that really is a milestone that's worth marking and celebrating as a community. Happily, Nintendo has been pretty forthcoming about giving us new projects to look forward to, and that's all before the main event designed to draw attention to the anniversary has passed.
The Ocarina of Time Remake is obviously the biggest news we have seen so far, with the beloved N64 title returning for the Switch 2, all with an upgraded aesthetic and new features. While we wait for that, the original release is getting a fan-made sequel that could easily be one of the most ambitious releases of its type that we have ever seen.
YouTube: Justice 2 FreeIn case you don't keep up with the modding scene too much, F3 2026 is currently ongoing. F3 is an online event that essentially functions as a fair for free fan games, all shared via the Kaze Emanaur YouTube channel. There's a heavy focus on Super Mario and Zelda releases, but you can find small projects for games from across Zelda's portfolio.
One of those is Glass of Fate, an upcoming Zelda fan game that the solo developer has been working on for a staggering seven years. The game is designed to serve as a direct sequel to both Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, though the overall tone in the trailer presented as part of the event is considerably darker.
We also get an entirely new Link form this time around, as the Cursed Hero comes to the fore. What exactly his curse is (beyond continuously reincarnating to save the day) is unclear, but the game world looks to be in a considerably worse state than anything we have seen in the main releases to date.
The game itself is built in Godot, so it's technically an entirely original project, rather than a ROM hack or anything similar. The developer has also remained remarkably communicative over the last seven years, posting regular updates, maintaining a Discord, and cotinuing to drop development timelapses.
There's no confirmation yet on when Glass of Fate will be getting a full release, but the project does appear to be one of the furthest along that we saw at F3 2026. Other than that, the Ocarina of Time Remake should be along in relatively short order this year, so that should give you plenty to do to pass the time while you wait.
