TV Anchor Dominique Dillion Reacts to Falling Asleep on Air

WABC Anchor Bill Ritter Details First Symptoms He Experienced 2 Years Before Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Dominique Dillion is hitting snooze on her viral on-air nap.

A week after the local morning anchor woke up the internet when she briefly dozed off during a live Good Morning Memphis broadcast, she detailed the moment she realized she was catching z’s on TV.

“I opened my eyes, and it was cutting to the next shot,” Dillion recalled during an appearance on the Today show that aired on Aug. 5. “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I can’t believe this just happened to me.’”

“I am mortified,” she continued to Craig Melvin and Laura Jarrett. “I was pinching myself under the desk like, ‘This has to be a nightmare.’ Like one of those work nightmares, because this is not my life right now.”

And while FOX13 Memphis producers were in the control room, they didn’t realize Dillion was napping.

“They thought I was simply looking down at my tablet,” she explained, “because who falls asleep in one minute, sitting up, in front of cameras?”

As for how Dillion realized she fell asleep? Her colleague, meteorologist Brittani DuBose, “whispered my name from across the room,” waking her up.

But rest assured, the reason why Dillion—mom to daughters Dakota, 2, and Delilah, 8 months, with her husband—was so exhausted that morning is very relatable to any young mom.

The news anchor—who wakes up at 1:30 a.m. for her 4:30 a.m. shift—struggled to get her youngest to fall asleep the night before, while her husband was working a double shift at BNSF Railway.

“I was trying to get them down to sleep at 8 o’clock, but my 8-month-old, she wasn’t having it,” Dillon recalled. “She was teething, and I just couldn’t console her. I gave her some teething medicine and nothing was working. The next thing you know it’s 10:30, 11 o’clock before I can get actually get her down to sleep. Then all I have is a couple hours of rest before I have to be up in the morning and be at work.”

And Dillion didn’t have to worry about any nightmare REM-ifications from the public. After all, people expressed their support online for the journalist following her viral moment.

“It’s not always a nice place, and what I love so much about this situation is that it shows the good side of humanity and that people understand what I’m going through as a mother,” she shared. “There’s so many mothers out there and parents in general who work hard. They show up to work, they give 100 percent and then they go home and that’s like a whole ‘nother full-time job as well, and they’re giving 100 percent to their families.”
