Ubisoft Officially Reveals New Ghost Recon Game

Ubisoft didn't say much beyond confirming its existence

Ubisoft has announced a ton of Ghost Recon news to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary. That includes the official reveal that a new game is in the works.

During today's anniversary stream, live producer Irina-Gabriela Popa shared the news. "For the past few years, we've been building the next chapter of Ghost Recon," she said. "I'm really excited to share with you that now we're ready to put it to the test because we want to deliver a fun, fresh experience that stays true to everything that defines Ghost Recon: tactical action, large scale operations, credible military storytelling, and of course, the Ghost Unit." Fans were then encouraged to sign up for the Ghost Recon Insider Program to gain early access to future closed tests.

Beyond the confirmation that the game exists, Ubisoft shared very few details on what fans can expect. The stream did not include a trailer, screenshots, key art, or even a title for the upcoming Ghost Recon project. While Ubisoft only officially announced it today, leaks have given fans a better picture of what this mystery game will be. Reports indicate that the title, codenamed Project OVR, has been going through a troubled development for several years. Leaks suggest Project OVR will move away from the open-world looter-shooter gameplay loop of recent entries in the franchise and return to a more grounded tactical shooter experience. The game will also return to a first-person perspective.

During the anniversary stream, Ubisoft also announced a major update to 2017's Ghost Recon Wildlands. The Last Rites update is available now and adds a brand-new mission to the game. Players now have extensive freedom to customize gameplay elements like enemy behavior, time of day, weather, damage values, and more. The update also adds 4K/60FPS support for current-gen consoles. To celebrate the anniversary, Ghost Recon Wildlands is free to play from Aug. 6-10.
