Though The CW's remake of the popular '90s action series enjoyed a four-season run on the air, Walker season 5 didn't wind up coming to fruition despite initial buzz. Based on the Chuck Norris-led series Walker, Texas Ranger that originally ran from 1993 to 2001, the reboot starred Jared Padalecki as the eponymous lawman, Cordell Walker. When not stopping any number of dangerous criminals with his personal brand of Western justice, Walker must also try to reconnect with his family that drifted away during his years as an undercover officer. Different from the typical CW show, Walker was fairly intense.

Though the series was hardly a critical darling and only managed a meager 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, it was one of The CW's most consistently popular scripted series during its run. The green-branded network has gone through several changes in recent years, including the cancelation of many of its scripted shows. Stalwarts like The Flash and Riverdale were given the ax despite fan popularity, and The CW has pushed in a more cost-effective direction as things got more dire with the network. With that in mind, Walker was a tough CW show to see be canceled despite remaining so popular.

Walker Was Cancelled After Season 4

Just a few weeks after The CW's financial approach to shows like Walker and All American was revealed to the public, the network opted to cancel Walker before season 5. Though the move is an unpopular one, it isn't particularly surprising considering The CW's direction in recent years, and Walker joins shows like Riverdale and The Flash that were yanked off the air despite drawing in huge ratings. With shows like that getting the ax, it seems likely that other stalwarts like All American would soon be gone too.

During the 2023 cancelation spree at The CW, the executives were quite vocal about why only four shows survived the network cuts, and it was viewership numbers down the line. Referring to Walker, Superman & Lois, All American, and All American: Homecoming, The CW's President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz candidly said, "Those shows are monsters." Despite that, Walker was canceled, and Superman & Lois is on its final season.

What Walker Season 5's Story Would Have Been About

It is impossible to guess what might have happened in season 5 of Walker, and the major plotlines and shocking twists are going to depend on what happens throughout season 4. With that in mind, there are still a few consistent things that viewers could have expected, including case-of-the-week action, and a further exploration of Cordell's relationships. Though the show is very much about roundhouse kicking and Western justice, Cordell's struggles to relate to his kids are also important, especially as they continue to be dragged into their father's dangerous world.

Walker's Prequel Series Was Also Cancelled

Walker wasn't the only show in the franchise to come to an end quickly. In 2022, The CW launched Walker: Independence, a prequel set in the late 1800s that followed Abby Walker (Katherine McNamara), an ancestor of Padalecki's character. The series was more of a traditional Western than Walker, exploring Abby's quest for justice after seeing her husband murdered while traveling westward. Despite earning positive reviews, Walker: Independence was cancelled after just a season on The CW, which was a tough blow for the budding franchise. Unfortunately, the Walker franchise wasn't meant to continue far and wide beyond its start.
