Wolverine’s Newest Love Interest Is Already Dividing Fans

Jared is a writer, editor, and Communications Studies graduate who loves popular nerd culture (almost anything to do with Marvel, DC, Star Wars, or The Lord of the Rings) and the interactive storytelling medium. Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.
The narrative has been the most clandestine aspect of Marvel’s Wolverine thus far, and it’s wonderful to have finally gotten a fuller taste of it. Ahead of Insomniac’s San Diego Comic-Con 2026 panel on July 23, a cinematic story trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine has been released that gives the game a beating heart to go along with its yellow-and-black costume and adamantium-laced claws.
This trailer reiterates that Marvel’s Wolverine’s story will have Logan globe-trotting across Madripoor, Canada, and Japan, battling cyborg Reavers and red-clad Hand ninjas. What we didn’t know is that Insomniac’s Wolverine has an established love interest who fans will be incredibly familiar with, for better or worse.
Wolverine spends the whole cinematic trailer trying not to let a cherished photo of him and a woman drift away, only for it to catch flame and be incinerated. It’s not officially confirmed, but this woman looks unmistakably like Marvel’s Wolverine’s Jean Grey. On X, all user ReignOfPride had to say, with over 28,000 likes, is, “Oh my god…”
Fans are making it clear what their opinion is on a Wolverine and Jean pairing. User MyFavesBeDead writes, “Free them from each other I beg,” while user IamJrdn23 says, “The Cyclops fans aren’t gonna like this.”
It’s not wholly surprising that Wolverine is being paired with Jean in Marvel’s Wolverine, given their extensive romantic history in comics, but it’s a rather divisive pairing nonetheless. For instance, Jean is traditionally paired with Scott Summers’ Cyclops, and Wolverine typically assumes the role of the third wheel in their ensuing love triangle (most recently depicted in X-Men ’97).
To be fair, we don’t yet know if Cyclops is in this universe, or what his role will be, and it’s possible that Jean met and began dating him before the events of Marvel’s Wolverine. The story trailer has Wolverine looking at the photo fondly, as if they’re no longer together, and Jean doesn’t have any significant or warm interaction with Wolverine when she arrives in Marvel’s Wolverine’s extended gameplay showcase.
It’s a fairly tired trope as is, especially after so many iterations of the same romantic woes. That said, Marvel’s Wolverine’s original continuity has seemingly made them a couple, at least at one point in Wolverine’s abnormally long life, and that’s inherently more interesting than having him merely pine over Jean.
Marvel’s Wolverine is scheduled to be released for PS5 on September 15, 2026.
