It doesn't get talked about enough but Regina Hall is one of the most consistent, versatile, and impressive actors of her time. She has been good in pretty much everything she has appeared in over the past 25 or so years. Her career started with a seemingly small role in 1999's The Best Man, which ended up growing into a bigger part for the sequel. Her true breakout came a year later, though, when she stole many scenes in Scary Movie as Brenda Meeks.
Most of her famous early roles showcased her ability to deliver great comedic lines and just be a hilarious performer. However, by the time the 2010s rolled around, her versatility began to shine through. She popped up in everything from thrillers like Law Abiding Citizen and When the Bough Breaks to action flicks like Shaft to musical projects like O'Dessa. And that's not even mentioning some of her greatest works. Hall is still going strong, set to return as Brena in the upcoming Scary Movie 6 and fresh off one of her best performances ever in 2025.
Looking at the best films in Regina Hall's career shines a light on why she's such a great actress and has been for over two decades.
10 Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul. (2022)
While it's noted that Regina Hall is a versatile performer, she's still at her best in the realm of comedy. That was evident in Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. In this mockumentary, she stars alongside the talented Sterling K. Brown as the first lady and pastor at a megachurch.
The plot sees them work together to rebuild their congregation after a major scandal causes them a huge blow. Reviews were positive and Hall's work as Trinite Childs is fantastic. She has excellent chemistry with Brown and they are addictive to watch together on screen.
9 Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016)
It was surprising to see the Barbershop franchise return in 2016. The first two films were good, yet they came out more than a decade prior. It ended up being a good idea to give us a new one because Barbershop: The Next Cut received the best reviews of any installment to date.
The film sits at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and while most of the original cast returned, several new names were added. Among them was Regina Hall as Angie, who runs the female side of the location. Most of the story aspects were predictable but the cast is a blast together.
8 The Best Man Holiday (2013)
As noted, Regina Hall made her big screen debut in the rom-com The Best Man in 1999. She played a stripper named Candace "Candy" Sparks who ends up with Julian "Murch" Muchison. For this sequel over a decade later, Hall had a bigger role as Candy and Murch were now married.
The original cast, which also includes Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Sanaa Lathan, and more, came back and fans of the first film were happy to see them all together again. The holiday theme added something here and it was great to get more of Hall.
7 Master (2022)
Master features one of Regina Hall's greatest performances. The film blends horror and thriller and focuses on two Black women who look to find their place at an elite New England University that was built on a Salem-era gallows hill. As they navigate politics and more, they begin to hallucinate manifestations of the town's past.
Hall plays one of the two leads, Gail Bishop, alongside Zoë Renee's Jasmine Moore. Critics said it wasn't the most suspenseful thriller, yet it was praised for how it crafted horror elements and for the performances of its leads.
6 Scary Movie (2000)
The movie that made Regina Hall into a star. Scary Movie still holds up as one of the best parody films ever, poking fun at so many movies, from the obvious nods to Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer to unexpected references to The Matrix and The Usual Suspects.
Hall plays Brenda Meeks, who is possibly the funniest part of the film. The scene where she's being obnoxious in the movie theater, and everyone stabs her, is iconic. While this is likely the best of the Scary Movie franchise, Hall was a highlight of subsequent sequels.
5 Support The Girls (2018)
For most of her career, Regina Hall has been a spectacular supporting actor, yet Support the Girls gave her the chance to be a lead and she delivered. The film takes place at a bar/restaurant in the same vein as Hooters, where the women working there dress in tiny shorts and small shirts.
Hall plays Lisa, the general manager of the place, who also acts as a mother figure of sorts to the younger staff. Haley Lu Richardson, Dylan Gelula, and Shayna McHale are strong in the movie, yet it's Hall's work as Lisa that holds it all together. There's a sweetness to this hidden gem that makes it stand out in Hall's filmography.
4 Think Like A Man (2012)
Think Like a Man is one of the best and most popular romantic comedies of the 2010s. Based on Steve Harvey's book, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, the film starts with a group of women who use the book to help fix issues in their relationships. However, the men get a hold of it and use it against the women, throwing everything into disarray.
The cast is stacked, from Gabrielle Union to Kevin Hart to Meagan Good to Michael Ealy to Taraji P. Henson, and more. Regina Hall plays Candace, a single mom who starts a romance with Michael, who is a known mama's boy, giving hem one of the film's best subplots.
3 Girls Trip (2017)
The world needs more hilarious comedies centered on women. Bridesmaids showed how well this could work and Girls Trip is right up there with it as one of the best in the genre. This movie follows a group of four friends who go on a trip to New Orleans for a music festival.
Regina Hall plays Ryan, a lifestyle guru. She's joined by Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish, who all bring something different to the table, especially once the wild antics begin. It's just a fun film from start to finish and we might be getting a sequel.
2 The Hate U Give (2018)
While Hall is typically at her best in the realm of comedy, her best films are heavy dramas. The first is The Hate U Give, a powerful movie based on the novel of the same name. It centers on a young girl as she navigates the unjust killing of her friend by a police officer.
Amandla Stenberg is fantastic as the lead, yet the supporting cast around her is just as good. In that group is Regina Hall, who plays her mother, Lisa. Hall is incredible as she struggles with trying to help her daughter do what's right while navigating how dangerous those actions are.
1 One Battle After Another (2025)
It's hard to have a movie in your filmography that can top a Best Picture Academy Award winner. One Battle After Another is Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film, which follows a washed-up revolutionary and his daughter as they attempt to survive when a corrupt military officer from their past comes after them.
While the performances of Chase Infinity, Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, and Sean Penn got most of the acclaim, Regina Hall is an underrated star. She only has a few minutes on screen, yet she's captivating in each. Whether it's trying to save the young girl or interacting with corrupt officers, she's as good as she's ever been.
