A Good Thing in a Small Package: Viltrox 26mm f/2.8 EVO Review

Everybody loves a good pancake. A pancake lens, that is. Though some pancake lenses sacrifice quality for the sake of size, this new EVO lens begs to differ.

Pancake lenses are very well loved in the industry. They're the kind of lens that is always nice to have if you can afford an extra lens, especially if you like taking casual strolls with your camera. Throughout the years, there have been countless pancake lenses from almost every brand; however, not all of them performed as well as most of us had hoped. Because of the size, weight, and even budget factors, the quality of the glass and consequently the images would suffer.

For the past couple of years, Viltrox has been building their EVO lineup, which is made up of affordable lenses that perform much better than the typical budget lens. Most of them come as "evolved" versions of previously well-loved focal length and aperture combinations, but have been made to be sharper, focus better, and be more durable. With the news of a pancake lens coming under the EVO line, we had high hopes but also some worry for the sake of the consistency of the impressive product line that we've seen so far.

Build and Design

The Viltrox 26mm f/2.8 EVO comes in a remarkable all-metal build. Despite that, it weighs just 130 grams and comes in at just 66 x 24 mm. It comes with a unique metal magnetic lens hood that latches onto the lens regardless of whether the circular hood is attached or not. The lens hood is a removable cap with an opening for the image circle and has a 43mm filter thread that is much bigger than the front glass element. Personally, I would have liked this filter thread to be a slightly bigger 49mm just because filters are more common at that size. However, it is not much of an issue since the practical uses of this lens don't often call for the use of filters anyway.

On the most distal end of the barrel is a thin metal focus ring; however, since this lens does not come with any physical switches or buttons, setting to manual focus needs to be done on the camera body if the option is available. Below it is a thin gap between it and the similarly sized manual aperture ring. The aperture range goes from f/2.8 to f/16 with an additional stop at "A" that either sets it to automatic or moves the control to the camera body depending on the camera mode being used. At the very end of the barrel is a thin orange rubber gasket for weather sealing, and while there isn't much information on the extent of exposure the lens can take, it is a good enough indicator that the lens has some level of physical protection against moisture and rain.

Below, on the all-metal lens mount, are the lens contacts for the camera body and the usual USB-C port for any future firmware updates.

Image Quality and Performance

Pancake lenses are always designed to be casual, unassuming lenses that are best used with compact camera bodies as well. That is why there might be an assumption that such a lens won't perform as well as the other lenses in a brand's lineup. However, it seems that the intention of Viltrox is to produce a pancake lens that is worthy of being in the EVO line and a lens that does not sacrifice optics despite the physical requirements.

What I noticed is that this lens performs very similarly to the other lenses in the EVO line, and while it was not advertised to be an APO lens, it provides a similarly clean image with little to no chromatic aberration visible. While it is relatively sharp throughout the range, it seems that peak sharpness is around f/4 to f/6.3 and softest, as expected, at f/16.

Because this lens is still relatively wide, one wouldn't be surprised if significant distortion were visible; however, it seems to have very little barrel-type distortion that you wouldn't even notice unless you're intentionally photographing something that resembles a grid. At 26mm, this kind of distortion is barely significant, especially considering the expected use cases for this lens.

Focusing is also able to keep up with natural movement, especially when shooting using continuous autofocus. Realistically, I didn't look much into how it would be able to track faster objects, because that's pretty much outside the expected uses of this lens anyway.

Application and User Experience

While the Viltrox 26mm f/2.8 EVO might not be as thin as what others would expect of a pancake lens, it still is significantly compact, especially when used with a camera body that is also compact. This lens was made for casual uses such as photo walks around a city, visiting landmarks and museums, or even photographing daily experiences, especially in beautifully designed spaces such as cafes.

When paired with a camera that maintains its compact form, it allows the user to be less noticeable and anonymous. This lens can do very well shooting street photography, whether in your hometown or when traveling; it can also be used to photograph interiors, especially those that aren't too tight, and can even be used to shoot environmental portraits with a significant background.

The 26mm focal length, on a personal note, is also something I would consider to be a beneficial perspective whenever out on a walk, as it gives a wider-than-normal perspective that can allow the user to take a more immersed look at whatever subject they are shooting. When used in APS-C mode, it would result in a 39mm focal length that would then allow for a more isolated composition as a secondary option, specifically if cropping is not a problem.

Overall, this lens exceeds the expectations of what a pancake lens would deliver and is definitely worth considering for someone who wants an additional low-key Viltrox 26mm f/2.8 EVO prime for any particular use.

What I Liked

  • Light and compact lens
  • Great image quality
  • Very minimal distortion
  • All-metal build

What Can Be Improved

  • Filter thread could have been made a more common size
