Kurt Russell’s Surprising Return In Taylor Sheridan’s New Western Is Perfectly Timed

After joining Screen Rant in January 2025, Guy became a Senior Features Writer in March of the same year, and now specializes in features about classic TV shows. With several years' experience writing for and editing TV, film and music publications, his areas of expertise include a wide range of genres, from comedies, animated series, and crime dramas, to Westerns and political thrillers.
2026 has already been a big year for Kurt Russell, with his latest performances both proving to be massive hits, and marking major returns to the Western genre after 11 years away. We’re likely to see Russell in action again later this year, too, as he reprises his starring role in the second season of Taylor Sheridan’s newest TV creation.
It might seem unlikely, but Preston Clyburn is going to have far more screentime in season 2 of The Madison on Paramount+. Although Russell’s character was killed off in the very first episode of the series, the Clyburn family patriarch will be among the lead characters in its next installment, which will feature more extensive flashback sequences than season 1.
Preston’s wife Stacy is seen resting near the site of his grave at the end of The Madison’s first season, implying that she’s finally processing her grief and continuing to live his legacy herself. Yet, the show’s second season will delve deeper into the past of Russell’s character, focusing on a secret he kept about their property in Montana.
With production long since completed on The Madison season 2, there’s a good chance it will be released before the end of 2026. This timing couldn’t be better for its male lead, who’s riding high due to the critical acclaim his new film is currently receiving. The Rivals of Amziah King is already being compared with Kurt Russell’s best movies.
Kurt Russell Is Taking Center Stage In The Madison Season 2
Whereas departing cast member Matthew Fox has suggested that The Madison season 2 will be “a little bit lighter [with] more humor involved”, it appears that the defining change in tone for the show’s new season will introduce a sense of immediate jeopardy into the Clyburn family’s life in Montana.
As Kurt Russell told Variety back in March, “The level of real danger goes up. Things begin to become dangerous in realistic ways.” The danger in question revolves around a secret Russell’s protagonist, Preston Clyburn, has hidden from his family. While Preston is now dead and gone, his past haunts those left behind to pick up the pieces.
What’s more, Russell himself will be appearing more prominently in this season, as there’s no longer a need to underscore the shock and grief felt by his deceased character’s family by keeping him mostly out of the picture. Flashbacks will be more lengthy this time around, and will have a direct bearing on the juicier plot developments of season 2.
Those unaware that both of The Madison’s first two seasons were shot back-to-back around Kurt Russell’s schedule probably find it surprising that a figure killed off in the show’s first episode only appears more frequently as it develops. But it will be music to the ears of Kurt Russell fans, who are presently reeling from his first Western movie since 2015.
Russell’s Stock As A Western Genre Legend Has Never Been Higher
The Rivals of Amziah King boasts a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90%, having opened in theaters this week to rave reviews, not least thanks to Kurt Russell’s charismatic performance as villain Dob McCoy. The movie has superseded The Hateful Eight as his highest-rated Western of the 21st century, and is now surely second only to Tombstone among his releases in the genre.
Although Russell’s status as a genre legend was already established by his portrayal of lawman Wyatt Earp in the 1993 movie, his resurgence to the forefront of new Western releases in 2026 has only bolstered his legacy further. As a result, the weight he gives Taylor Sheridan’s new small-screen family Western is comparable with Kevin Costner’s impact on Yellowstone.
It must be said that Matthew and Angelina LookingGlass are the real stars of The Rivals of Amziah King, but Kurt Russell’s appearance unquestionably elevates the film. Likewise, the more he features in The Madison, the bigger the show’s appeal to millions of TV Western fans.
