Love Island USA Executive Producer James Barker Dead After Suffering Medical Emergency in Fiji

The crew behind Love Island is mourning the loss of one of their own.

James Barker, a producer behind the series since 2020, died after experiencing an “unexpected medical emergency” while filming in Fiji, ITV America and Peacock confirmed in a joint statement June 15. He was 40.

James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock,” the statement noted. “He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent, and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.”

The network added, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to James’ partner, family, friends, and colleagues.”

Barker joined the Love Island family in 2020 as a story producer before working his way up to executive producer ahead of season four. The show is set to honor him during its June 16 episode.

And throughout working on it, Barker had shared how much the series meant to him.

“The minute I heard #loveisland was coming to the US, I knew I had to be a part of it,” Barker wrote in an Instagram post shortly after season seven’s premiere in June 2025. “Now, 6 years later, we’re doing absurd numbers on @loveislandusa and I love my job more than I ever have. Congrats to the team, past and current. We did it.”

Prior to joining Love Island, Barker got his start in television at Leftfield Pictures in 2011 and worked as a producer on shows including Counting Cars, Pawn Stars and Forged in Fire. From there, he went on to work on Queer Eye as well as serving as executive producer on numerous seasons of Love Island and Love Island Games

In addition to his love for reality television, Barker also established a career as a DJ. Survived by his partner Adam Roth, ITV America and Peacock said the couple’s “shared love of music was at the center of the life they built together—both at home and experiencing music all over the world.”
