Marvel Corrupts The Avengers' Logo In Shocking New Image

Throughout their extensive history, the Avengers have confronted virtually every category of apocalyptic danger imaginable. They have repelled alien invasions led by the Kree, Skrulls, Brood, and Chitauri; defeated reality-warping cosmic entities like Korvac, Kang the Conqueror, and Thanos; endured multiversal incursions, and opposed world-dominating dictators like Doctor Doom and Hydra's Captain America. As difficult as the challenge may be, Earth's Mightiest Heroes always come out on top, even when they meet defeat at first and have to do the impossible to turn things around.

Among every nightmare they have faced, Marvel Zombies presents perhaps the bleakest outcome of all: a universe where Earth's Mightiest Heroes fall almost immediately, become the very apocalypse they tried to prevent, and leave virtually no hope for the world they assembled to protect.

Marvel introduces a new Marvel Zombies universe starring Frank Castle as humanity's last hope against the undead. In a timeline where some of Earth's Mightiest have already fallen to the zombie virus, the Punisher shows no mercy against zombified heroes like Iron Man. The unlettered preview pages for Marvel Zombies: War Zone #1 (via AIPT) reveal the deaths of heroes like Tony Stark, Shang-Chi, and Thor. However, they also tease a major twist with the image of a still living Thor kneeling in front of longtime X-Men villain Gorgon, who sits on a throne in front of an upside-down Avengers emblem.

The Avengers' iconic "A" emblem has stayed largely untouched across more than six decades, but Marvel has redesigned the logo to reflect major events. In the 1990s, relaunch initiatives like Heroes Reborn pushed the logo into heavy-metal territory with blocky 3D geometry and polished chrome. When the franchise turned darker, stories like Avengers Disassembled and Dark Avengers shadowed the familiar ringed "A" with sharper, sinister angles. The MCU adopted this visual shorthand, evolving the logo from the sleek, brushed-aluminum design of the 2012 original into the electronic style of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the rust-worn aesthetic of Infinity War, and the mystical tinted glass of Avengers: Doomsday.

No Marvel Zombies Universe Has Ended On A Bright Note

Across the Marvel Multiverse, several realities present unmistakable examples of the Avengers suffering complete defeat, often with catastrophic consequences for their worlds. The Marvel Zombies saga provides the clearest collection of those timelines. Earth-2149 depicts the original Avengers' rapid infection after the zombie plague reaches the superhero community. Later installments, including the second Marvel Zombies, Marvel Zombies Return, Marvel Zombies 3, Marvel Zombies 4, and Marvel Zombies Destroy! explore additional universes where infected heroes either spread the plague to new realities or leave civilizations permanently devastated.

Marvel's zombie realities represent only part of a tragic pattern across Marvel's alternate timelines. Old Man Logan reveals a world where the combined supervillain forces annihilate the Avengers and nearly every other heroic team. The Age of Apocalypse timeline eliminates the Avengers before they can become Earth's greatest defenders, and similarly, Ruins introduces a universe where many Avengers meet horrific fates during their origin stories. Still, Marvel Zombies' multiple iterations are especially tragic, as the Avengers themselves become the apocalypse.
