Masters of the Universe gets surprise streaming release on Prime Video

Masters of the Universe heads to Prime Video this week

Masters of the Universe, Hollywood's latest attempt at bringing He-Man to the big screen, bombed at the box office. It brought in over $113 million, according to Box Office Mojo, or just more than half of its nearly $200 million budget. Commercially, it performed poorly despite fairly strong critical reviews, with a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes and 86% on the site's audience-voted Popcornmeter.

If you're interested in Masters of the Universe but skipped it in theaters — and, going by the numbers, you probably did — you'll soon be able to watch it from your couch. Amazon announced Monday that director Travis Knight's underappreciated sci-fi film will come to Prime Video on Wednesday, July 22.

Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam of Eternia (Nicholas Galitzine) in the great state of... Oklahoma. He was sent there as a kid after his family and home were attacked by Skeletor (played by Jared Leto, who, unfortunately, is the best part of the movie). Adam has been in search of the Sword of Power ever since. Once he finds it, he ends up on a whirlwind adventure back in Eternia fighting for its freedom.

We quite enjoyed it, calling Masters of the Universe a "nearly perfect sci-fi fantasy epic" in our review. "Masters of the Universe feels like a movie from a bygone era: big dumb action-adventure spectacles that actually look good and aren't afraid to take themselves too seriously," Polygon's Jake Kleinman wrote.

Soon, you can enjoy that big dumb spectacle from home. It's worth checking out the new He-Man movie for its rockin' soundtrack alone, which Queen guitarist Brian May worked on.
