Nathan Fillion's The Rookie franchise expands in the Pacific Northwest with a great start.
The upcoming spinoff will have the same premise as the flagship, with Jay Ellis' Alex Holland bringing to life as its version of Fillion's John Nolan. Its official synopsis reveals that while in the middle of a disappointing midlife, he is forced to find a new life purpose, resulting in him joining Pierce County Police as its youngest rookie. The PNW-set series will tackle cases set in the "urban coast to the rural forest." The pilot for the series has already been filmed, and Ellis has some bold claims about it.
Speaking with Deadline, the actor revealed that he has watched the pilot twice and he believes that people are "gonna fall in love with all these characters.” Ellis continued to sing his castmates praises, adding that everyone adds something to the overall story of The Rookie: North. He made it clear, however, that it isn't in competition with The Rookie. Instead, he's excited about potential crossovers. Read his full quote below:
“Janet Montgomery, Chris Sullivan, Karen Fukuhara, Froy Gutierrez, we have Mya Lowe and Malik Watson, I think that everyone dives into their characters, and you root for them or identify with them, or you’re pissed with them. It just feels like an ensemble that you want to sit and grab a beer with or hang out, go to a music festival with, listen to Karol G and Justin Bieber all weekend.”
“If this works out, that is something that’s been floated, but I think we have to figure out how it works. We’ve got to get picked up first, fingers crossed. But I would love to.”
Earlier this month, Karen Fukuhara, who plays training officer Leah Mizuno in The Rookie: North, also had nothing but great things to say about working on the pilot. She revealed that ABC will likely make a decision about whether to move forward with the series sometime at the end of April or early May, which makes sense, as networks are finalizing their schedules for next fall. CBS has already announces its fall 2026 lineup, so all eyes are now on ABC and NBC to follow suit.

ABC Admits The Rookie Season 8’s Biggest Problem With Just 1 Line
The Alexi Hawley-created procedural has been plagued with a major issue and ABC can no longer deny it after 1 line in The Rookie season 8, episode 16.
Assuming that The Rookie: North gets picked up, which likely it will be, it's curious if it will impact the network's scheduling trend for its parent series. ABC usually saves The Rookie's premiere for mid-season, which is typically around January. The extended wait between cycles is admittedly frustrating, but if the broadcaster slots the spinoff into its timeslot during the fall, viewers of Fillion's fan-favorite show will have a worthy alternative.
What's curious now is whether The Rookie season 8 finale will drop some information about the franchise expansion. While a backdoor pilot is off the table, it doesn't mean that the flagship won't reveal new details that directly set up the events of The Rookie: North. From there, a brief, but important crossover of characters might happen, starting with Nathan Fillion's Nolan.
The Rookie season 8 airs every Monday on ABC.
