Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.

Final Fantasy fans still have a while to wait before another huge release like FF7 Rebirth, but that doesn’t mean the constant stream of products is stopping in the meantime. Even if you’re not tapped into the ongoing updates to FF14, there could still be a few relevant ways to idle away your time before the next mainline installment.

Final Fantasy Is Back With A Brand-New Game

Ascend The Shinra Tower board game contents

Final Fantasy 7: Ascend the Shinra Tower is a new FF7-themed board game, revealed in a Japanese press release from Square Enix and reported by RPG Site. The game follows the same basic concept as Arclight's Cat and the Tower, which challenged players with incrementally building and ascending a structure. In Japan, the game will be available on November 6, and pre-orders from Square Enix are already avaialble.

In FF7: Ascend the Shinra Tower, Cloud takes the place of the cat, and players work together to add layers to Midgar's iconic Shinra Tower. 24 wooden character pieces can be added to the tower along the way. These include iconic figures like Tifa, Aerith, and Sephiroth, comparatively minor Avalanche members like Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge, and throwaway machines and grunts working for Shinra.

While FF7: Ascend the Shinra Tower has only been revealed as a Japanese release, it will still be perfectly playable for plenty of Western fans, as the manual includes English, French, and German explanations of the rules. The game is set to retail for 4,400 JPY, roughly the equivalent of 28 USD.

Final Fantasy 7 Fans Should Love This One

FF7 Ascend The Shinra Tower Tokens

This certainly isn't as exciting as a reveal of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, but anyone who's played either the original FF7 or the first remake game should be able to appreciate the deft re-theming of Cat and the Tower. Making your way up Shinra Tower plays a central role in both the original and the remake, whether traveling through the actual interior floors of the building, taking a quick elevator ride, or committing to the comically overlong staircase ascent.

If nothing else, it's a charming collection of wooden game tokens based on FF7's characters, featuring some expressive chibi art that effectively makes even Sephiroth's smug aura a bit cute. Square Enix never seems to run out of ways to reinterpret the endlessly popular Final Fantasy 7, and this might very well be another successful take on the beloved IP.
