One Piece Grand Gourmet management sim announced
The acclaimed management sim studio Kairosoft is cooking up something tantalizing
Image: Toei AnimationIn the trailer, we see the Straw Hat Pirates’ chef Sanji leading the kitchen as a recognizable lineup of customers appears. Apparently, over 400 characters from the series will show up in all their pixelated glory, including everyone's favorite Buggy the Clown, and more. You’ll deploy the Straw Hat crew to hunt for better ingredients and use Devil Fruit abilities to improve meals. It’s frankly a great concept for a One Piece game, combining Sanji’s foodie impulses with lots of fun fan service.
Even for those who don’t have an investment in One Piece, the colorful characters and Kairosoft’s well-honed formula seem like they could pull in newbies. Those little chibi versions of the crew that adorn the food sets are positively adorable (there needs to be a physical plushie of chibi Chopper as soon as possible).
Perhaps the most exciting element of the announcement is the studio behind this new game. For those unaware, Kairosoft is a Japanese studio known for titles like Game Dev Story, a finely honed management sim that made its worldwide debut on mobile back in 2010 (the game was originally released in Japan in 1997). The game became such a massive hit when it landed on the iPhone App Store that the company ported dozens of its other management simulations, like Mega Mall Story and Dungeon Village, into English. At this point, almost all the studio’s massive back catalog has made the jump.
Considering the popularity of One Piece, the pairing seems like a dream come true. The show recently expanded its already significant reach with another season of the live-action series, and an all-new anime adaptation is on the way. We’ll find out how this cooking spin-off lands when it takes on a crowded release lineup later this year.
