A nostalgic new Pokémon fan title has just been revealed, with promises of a playable demo before the end of the year. This news is just one more great moment for the Pokémon series, especially for fans of the original games.
If all these nods at the beginning of the franchise aren't enough, the Pokémon modding community is on hand to provide even more moments for the franchise. One Pokémon ROM hack has recently revealed its first screenshots, and it's looking like a project fans will want to keep an eye on.
Pokémon Polaris is an upcoming Pokémon fan-made adventure through a brand-new world. The volunteer-run team announced the ROM hack project in an X post, along with plenty of screenshots to provide a sneak-preview.
According to the post, Polaris has been in development for six years already. The team is finally ready to reveal an "appetizer" to potential fans. The upcoming Pokémon fan game will take place in the world of Diviera, which is inspired by Latin America—more specifically, on Colombia.
Players will embark on a new journey with brand-new, custom-made artwork and music. The hack will feature a new cast of characters, a story to unravel, and new items (including empanadas!). Plus, make use of the brand-new (and adorable) Rotom Phone, which gives trainers access to their storage system, Pokédex, and many other features.
Pokémon Polaris is a ROM hack based on Pokémon Emerald, and uses the iconic GBA-style graphics. The fan project is still a long way from completion, as it's entirely volunteer-run. Despite this, the developers state that fans can "expect a playable demo before the end of this year."
The demo will allow fans to play through to the third gym of the region, giving them a great idea of what to expect from the finished hack. Once the team officially releases the full title, there are even tentative plans for a "post-launch free DLC expansion including a new area."
Of course, whether this actually happens depends on fan reception and the volunteers' drive to continue working on the project. For fans of Pokémon—and especially Pokémon Emerald—this is a title that's worth keeping in your sights.
